If you have the internet then you will have seen Copenhagen Fashion Week is in full swing. Showcasing the new autumn/winter 23 collections from every key Scandi brand – including Stine Goya, Rotate, Baum und Pferdgarten and of course, Ganni. While fashion month across New York, London, Milan and Paris always delivers endless outfit inspiration, the Copenhagen equivalent never fails to bring the street-stylers out in full force with fun, bright and bold looks that do not go unnoticed. But back to the runway, as Ganni has just excelled with its 'butterflies' show. Creative director Ditte Reffstrup has said, 'this season is all about transformation, change, and positivity, all things the butterfly symbolises. The collection has a more mature and grown-up feel this time, it’s sleek and strong yet totally Ganni'. While we couldn't help but be mesmerised by the sequins, metallic denim and high-shine co-ords that ventured down the catwalk, we also felt instant nostalgia.
Clearly the inspiration from the show came from iconic '90s girl bands – from Destiny's Child's double denim to Mis-Teeq's dresses worn over trousers and All Saints' cargo pants. We were instantly transported back to flicking through Smash Hits and Top of the Pops magazines throughout the '90s and early '00s to see what our favourite celebrities were wearing. Little did we know there would be a time where we can follow their every move on a thing called 'Instagram'. With every trend from these two decades becoming more and more prevalent during 2022 and 2023, especially, we're not surprised Ganni found its muse through the likes of Victoria Beckham, Beyoncé and Alesha Dixon during their girl band eras. Because who better to learn from than those who tried the trends the first time round?
Keep going to see all the outfits you can easily copy from the Ganni show, and get ready for some serious throwbacks!
Cropped Denim Jacket With Low-Rise Jeans
Forget the oversized denim jackets we've all been used to, we're going back to fitted and cropped styles worn with low-slung jeans, according to Ganni. While Kelly Rowland wore hers back in the year 2000 with court heels (they're also making a comeback, FYI), another Y2K way to wear them this time around is a baggy pair tucked into knee-high boots. Wear done up as a top to get the Destiny's Child and Ganni vibe.
Trouser Suit With Lace Bra
The trouser suit will always be key, no matter the season or decade, but Ganni have made a case for underwear as outerwear by styling the blazer open with a lace bra on show – aka, the Victoria Beckham and Mel B way circa 1998. We predict this will be copied for every night out from here on out.
Bandeau Top With Pencil Skirt And Knee-High Boots
Another girl band everyone played on repeat from 1998 through to the early '00s was Atomic Kitten. In 2003, Jenny Frost wore her bandeau top – formally known as a 'boob tube' – with a knee-length skirt and tall boots. And guess what? We also saw this look on the autumn/winter 23 runway, the Ganni way, with a metallic denim strapless top, skirt co-ord and cowboy boots.
Dress Over Trousers
It was only last month Katie Holmes tried out the dress over jeans pairing, and now Ganni has put the – once crowd-splitting – duo firmly back on the map for 2023. While Mis-Teeq members Su-Elise Nash and Sabrina Washington wore their flared jeans with printed dresses in 2002, Ganni has added a sequin mini to slouchy trousers. Would you try it out? If you're still uncertain, we predict boots over trousers will be a key styling trick this year so you can always try this out first.
Khaki Cargo Pants With A Simple Top
Cargo pants (previously 'combat trousers') are back in a big way this year. Confirming our findings is the fact Ganni has put them back on the catwalk for autumn/winter 23, so they're set to stick around even longer. We're pretty sure there wasn't a girl band throughout the late '90s and early '00s that didn't wear a pair with a vest or strapless top. And now it's up to us all to bring the look back – All Saints would be proud!
Spaghetti Strap Slip Dress
Kate Moss was the poster girl for the slip dress in the '90s, however, celebs including Michelle Williams also wore them well into the early '00s. For autumn/winter 2023, Ganni has given then seasonal update by adding knee-high boots instead of peep-toe heels, just like Michelle and Beyoncé. And we're pretty pleased the peep-toe isn't making a return!
