In terms of TikTok skincare hacks, while some are well-researched and backed by sound advice, others - enter SPF contouring - are darn right dangerous (for our edit of the most dangerous TikTok skincare hacks, click here). To filter out the best from the rest, we’ve spoken to two skincare experts for their honest opinion around which skincare hacks are actually worth their salt.
1. Double Cleansing Daily
Advocated by several skincare specialists, double cleansing has been ‘a thing’ for some-time. ‘It’s a key part of achieving that choc-choc skin,’ says celebrity facialist and skincare expert, Ada Ooi. What exactly is choc-choc skin I hear you ask? ‘It means well-moisturised skin that has a healthy, juicy and plumped-up glow.’ Ada’s advice is to start with an oil-based cleanser before applying something gel-based. ‘Double cleansing is a great way to remove all traces of make-up and in turn, ensure the products you apply after can work more effectively,’ adds Mimi Luzon, celebrity aesthetician.
2. Face Icing To Bolster Glow
‘This is a trend I’m definitely on board with,’ says Ada, ‘when the ice roller comes into contact with your skin, the stark coldness will boost microcirculation, flush out toxins and encourage collagen production.’ Mimi agrees. ‘While it’s important to note that the effects are temporary, icing is an excellent way to reduce puffiness, inflammation and water retention,’ she says, ‘and it creates an instant glow.’ Word of caution? ‘If you have sensitive skin, be careful as it can lead to further sensitivity,’ adds Mimi.
3. Hydrating Skin To Soften Fine lines
‘Anything which involves hydration gets a massive tick from me,’ says Ada. As our skin is made up of 65% water, hydration is the foundation to maintaining good skin health. When our skin is dehydrated, fine lines can appear more prominent. ‘Skin consists of natural hyaluronic acid which keeps it hydrated, healthy and fresh,’ explains Mimi, ‘so reach for products that contain hyaluronic acid.’ How does hyaluronic acid work? ‘It captures moisture from the air and retains it in the skin,’ says Mimi, ‘this increased hydration keeps collagen (connective tissue) moist and increases elasticity.’

4. DIY Face Masks
There are various DIY masks doing the rounds on TikTok, but one that makes a recurring appearance involves a mix of honey, turmeric and milk. ‘I really love a DIY mask and believe you can create some wonderful treatments with items from your pantry,’ says Mimi. ‘Honey is great as it's an anti-bacterial and turmeric is wonderful for softening skin and enhancing glow.’ With that said, Ada believes we need to be cautious when mixing ingredients – ‘you’d get much better results from a good quality face mask.’
Other DIY concoctions, like a coffee granule exfoliator, should be avoided as this will be too abrasive and harsh on the skin.
5. Gua Sha Facial Massage
Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese method uses a tool to boost circulation and improve lymphatic function. ‘Gua Sha is a huge part of my practice as a facialist and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner,’ says Ada, ‘it has been proven to boost micro-circulation by up to 400% and is brilliant for depuffing, brightening and evening the complexion.’ If you want to give it a go, invest in the right tools and watch a tutorial from a trained practitioner.
