Best kids' swimwear

With the summer holidays fast approaching, families across the UK will be gearing up for the Big Family Holiday™, which means rifling through the mountains of the previous year's holiday clothes to find that nothing fits your kids anymore, and they need a whole new wardrobe. Sigh. If you're heading anywhere likely to have a pool, you'll know that it'll be the epicentre of your getaway, which means that decent kids' swimwear is a must-have on your packing list.

Whether you're braving the British summertime with an Airbnb in the UK or a family-friendly hotel or are heading further afield (best hotels in Spain, anyone?) for beach days and all-inclusive perks, we spoke to Kirstie Duke, co-founder of Töastie Kids, for some top tips for buying kids' swimwear and have scoured the web to find plenty of options that tick many of the boxes.

What to look for in kids' swimwear:

Bright colours

You might have seen information circulating around the web from water safety experts Alive Solutions, relaying the results of its study on the colour of swimsuits and their visibility in the water. While muted, pastel colours are aesthetically pleasing and look great for your matching swimwear photos on the Insta grid, they aren't the safest when it comes to seeing your children in the water. Instead, it's best to opt for neon or bright colours.

Kirstie says, 'Bright colours are not only super engaging and fun for kids, but a critical consideration for water safety. Where pale colours virtually disappear, and dark colours can be mistaken for shadows, vibrant, contemporary colour-blocking designs give maximum visibility in the water. Being able to immediately spot your little one on land or water is a huge win!'

UV protection

Kirstie tells us, 'UV protection built into their swimwear saves time and stress wrangling with kids for constant sunscreen applications... It's also worth noting that sunscreens often contain toxins that, when washed off into the water, damage our marine life.'

Certain brands, such as Töastie Kids, are 'specifically designed to cover key areas (shoulders, back, chest and arms) and provide an extra layer of protection against the sun's harmful rays. [Its products are] made with a special type of fabric that has a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating of SPF 50+, the recommended level of protection for children as their sensitive skin is more susceptible to sunburn.'

Not all of the options on our list offer this material, but they're still great swimwear brands, so make sure to invest in a great SPF for kids for when you're by the pool or out and about.

Fit and comfort

It goes without saying that an uncomfortable child is an unhappy one, so selecting swimsuits that don't irritate their skin, with buttery-soft fabrics and practical design elements like zips for easy changing, will all make life easier.

With those factors in mind, we've chosen some of the best options from our favourite brands for kids' swimwear to make packing easier. The countdown to that beach-side cocktail is on...
