It is a truth universally acknowledged that Kate Moss is an arbiter of taste. There is a reason you can currently find approximately 28446465858 articles on the internet dedicated to dissecting her style, starting with the best Kate Moss '90s looks and including every Glastonbury outfit she's ever worn. She is not to be questioned when it comes to matters of a sartorial nature, she just knows what she's doing. This is why I have found myself convinced that an item of clothing I wore (almost) every day in the mid-noughties has made an unexpected return. After all, if Kate Moss is suddenly re-wearing her denim mini skirt, should I not be, too?

Let me explain. Earlier this week, I saw a picture of Kate Moss walking her dog in an outfit I assumed could only belong to 2006. Given my penchant for scrolling endlessly through nostalgic pictures of stylish celebrities (I'm not proud), I wasn't surprised that the algorithm had served me some solid gold inspiration courtesy of a mid-noughties Moss. But no, this is Kate Moss circa. May 2025. Hold the phone, and then maybe use it to call your friends, because our favourite supermodel is making a case for the denim mini skirt once more.

There she was in her lightwash denim mini, complete with frayed edging, which she'd paired with Isabel Marant lace-up flats, a simple black tank, open shirt, oversized sunglasses and – wait for it – cuffs. Yes, cuffs, the likes of which you probably last thought about in 2006, when they were the height of chic. Rather than looking out of time, though, Moss looked perfect. I mean, of course she did, she's a supermodel (and she's been wearing denim skirts since the early '90s). But she managed to remind us how to assemble the perfect spring outfit. To present this in mathematical terms because, well, why not? A denim skirt + simple top and great accessories = winning formula.

It's possible Moss has been paying attention to this season's runways, given the parade of denim minis which emerged at the spring/summer shows. Ahluwalia's came printed with matching jackets, 3.1 Phillip Lim's had ruffles, Duran Lantik's had exaggerated 3D side pockets and Ermanno Scervino added embossed florals.

Of course, if you're slightly nervous about a shorter hemline, you could swap the mini for a great denim midi skirt or even a denim maxi skirt, should you be so inclined. Having had a browse of current styles on offer, though, I'd suggest there are some excellent new iterations which update this noughties staple for 2025. From straight high-waisted skirts to flared versions and those with button-down details, there's something about this season's denim minis that feel, well, fresh. Pair yours with suede ballet flats and a great straw bag – even add the cuffs to channel the boho trend. It's an easy, no-fuss outfit.

That Kate Moss, she really knows what she's doing, doesn't she?

Wear with tucked-in white blouses for your own take on that elusive French Girl style.

COS' skirt is a bit longer than a lot of the denim minis out there, so is that bit more wearable. Try with oversized light knits on cooler days or with a simple tank top and a pair of the best flip-flops during a heatwave.

With a flattering A-line silhouette, the contrast stitching on this skirt makes it feel entirely contemporary. Wear with white T-shirts, socks and loafers.

This flared style will give you more movement if you're not a fan of straighter styles. Wear now with flat Mary-Janes and swap for knee-high boots come autumn.
