Who Would Have Guessed That The Most-Wanted Celebrity Accessory Of 2020 Would Be Flip Flops?

Well, other than a face mask of course...

One of the best things about fashion is its ability to make us all believe that a practical item we've all been wearing without thought for decades is, suddenly, brand new. It's sartorial gaslighting and, even if you don't think you'd ever fall victim to such a cruel pattern of behaviour, chances are you're ignoring the flared jeans in your wardrobe. This is probably why every celebrity from here to the nearest TikTok mansion is suddenly wearing flip flops again, like they've just been invented.

Ana de Armas has been wearing her simple back pair on one of her many, many dog walks with boyfriend Ben Affleck. She matches them with flowing, embroidered summer dresses, which makes for an excellent heatwave-appropriate outfit. Then, there's Olivia Palermo, who wore her flip flops with an oversized shirt and, of course, the symbol of 2020: a face mask.

Speaking of face masks, Bella Hadid has been wearing hers with her own take on flip flops – or Alexander Wang's, to be precise. She wore the designer's Ivy Logo Thong Sandals, which are a heeled version of a classic flip flop complete with diamanté logo on the front strap. The fact that she paired these with jeans, an unbuttoned shirt and gold hoops really invoked the spirit of Adriana from The Sopranos, but that's a story for another time.

Meanwhile, over in Copenhagen, there's a fashion week going on. While the pandemic has, naturally, prevented many members of the fashion industry from attending (forcing them to watch shows virtually instead) there are a number of Danish show-goers enjoying their ability to see new collections from the likes of Ganni, Baum und Pferdgarten and Stine Goya in real life. And guess what? They're all wearing flip flops. Many of them are even wearing the same white pair from Ducie.

This is not strictly a new phenomenon. Last summer brought us heeled flip flops, resurrected from the deepest depths of the '90s archives. Everyone from Kendall Jenner to Katie Holmes was wearing them and they proved to be fairly divisive. In more agreeable shoes were, once again, the Scandi girls, who all decided to break free from the shackles of capitalism (sort of) and eschew the array of luxury flip flops that had cropped up in favour of humble Havaianas.

It's not just Copenhagen Fashion Week attendees, either. Many of Instagram's most recognisable faces are also flaunting their flip flops, reminding us all that they're not just for the beach. In fact, they're not even just flip flops anymore. They're the shoe of summer 2020.

Don't think that this is just a flash-in-the-pan trend. Jacquemus recently staged a socially-distanced fashion show in a French wheat field to present the spring/summer 2021 collection. And yes, it seems that flip flops will be just as popular next summer, too.

Oh, and they're also clearly appropriate footwear for anyone frequenting fields of wheat. Maybe Theresa May is a Jacquemus fan?
