Old trends always have a tendency to come back into fashion. Take the corset, for example. A garment most notably worn during the 18th century made its way back into our wardrobes this past decade, after an almost three-century-long hiatus.

This year, as predicted by online fashion marketplace, ASOS, we're seeing a revival of traditional and retro trainers. Yes, shoes that were popular in the '70s and '80s are strutting their way back into our lives this year, and we are hoping they are here to stay.

If you're not yet convinced - would you reconsider if we told you that your favourite celebrities were spotted wearing retro trainers? Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have been seen sporting Adidas Sambas, confirming that the traditional trainers from the days of the walkman are indeed making a comeback.

Megan Watkins, Head Stylist at online fashion site, SilkFred, outlines why retro and traditional trainers are seeing a revitalisation in 2023, explaining that celebrity influence does indeed play a huge role in their resurgence.

'In recent years, we've seen iconic styles from all sorts of eras make their way back into mainstream fashion, from the '70s right through to the '00s, and this is largely down to celebrities such as Zendaya and Bella Hadid who have influence over the younger generations.

'A trend is then picked up on by social media influencers, and then seeded down to consumers,' explains Megan.

But celebrities aren't the only ones shaping the resurgence of trends. Megan says that social media and TV also harness huge power over fashion trends too.

So, now that we have you convinced, let us walk you through the best retro trainers that you can buy on the internet right now.

How To Wear Retro Trainers

Megan says that when it comes to styling retro trainers, personal preference and style are key contributors to the finished look. There are many types of retro trainers on the market, so you may find that there are a lot of ways to incorporate them into an outfit.

'It totally depends on your personal style and the type of trainer,' explains Megan, 'If you've opted for an Air Jordan, I would recommend wearing these with baggy oversized low-rise jeans.'

'If you're looking at a more classic retro style such as New Balance, these always look best paired with either a neutral or colourful ankle sock and cut-off jeans/trousers to show off your footwear,' she adds.
