If there’s one thing we expect from a celebrity-adjacent Love Islander, it’s a cringe-worthy confession about ‘who they really are’ within seconds of appearing on the show. That’s why this year, when Gemma Owen chose not to reveal to that her dad is football legend Michael Owen everyone was slightly… confused.
There were some that thought she was itching to share, while others noted her uncomfortable nature when fellow castmates brought up football – was she choosing to hide her famous family to find true love, or was she just waiting for the opportune moment for a big reveal? Well, it turns out the Islanders have known for quite a while now, we just haven’t been shown them talking about it.
Love Island’s Ikenna Ekwonna dropped the bombshell during last night’s Aftersun after he was voted out of the show by the public earlier last week. Asked about his awareness of Gemma’s celebrity background, the 23-year-old replied, ‘We didn't really know until the second or third day but I don't think the girls knew the guys knew.’
While most of the contestants clearly knew early on, Gemma’s first partner on the show Liam Llewellyn told Aftersun viewers he had no idea when he chose to leave during the first week of filming. ‘I can't believe who that actually was,’ he said after Laura revealed all. ‘That's mad. I'm a Newcastle United fan. I actually have one of his tops when he came to the club!’
Michael Owen played for a number of high-profile teams during his illustrious career including Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Manchester United – as well as the England national team of course.
But for those who have been watching every single second of Love Island, you might have noted that Gemma has name-dropped her dad at least once in the series: on Love Island Unseen Bits. The Saturday episode saw Gemma appear in a Beach Hut Bonanza segment where she was asked to do an impression of her father. Trying her best to sound like the-now football commentator, she repeated his iconic quote: ‘When they don't score, they hardly ever win.’
So it’s no surprise the islanders are in on the secret then, but why all secrecy with viewers? If Gemma is open about who her father is in the villa, it seems strange that we haven’t been shown any clips of contestants talking about it – after all, celebrity children admitting their nepotism roots is usually a sure-fire way to guarantee exciting viewing on a show like Love Island.
Perhaps the family asked ITV to keep mentions of Michael to a minimum, or maybe said conversations just aren’t interesting enough to air – either way, it goes to show we might have to tune into Unseen Bits and Aftersun more for the full tea…
