Uber will cover 300,000 free rides and meals for NHS staff to help ‘reduce the pressure on the heroes on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis’. Providing 200,000 free rides and 100,000 free meals – the vouchers will be able to be claimed by anyone with an NHS email address.
Announced this morning, the free Uber trips are up to a value of £15 with Uber Eats offering £10 vouchers to NHS staff to use at any of the thousands of restaurants and stores across more than 150 towns and cities in the UK.
‘The incredible nurses, doctors and support staff of the NHS are doing heroic work at the forefront of this crisis, and everyone at Uber thanks them for their extraordinary efforts,’ Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Uber said in a press release. ‘We hope we can help in a small way with meals and transportation as they work tirelessly day and night.’
According to the release, NHS workers in London can also use JUMP bikes free of charge to get to and from work. The bikes operate across Camden, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea and Hackney, which between them have eight large NHS Trusts and tens of thousands of staff.
Everyone has a role to play in our national effort to help the NHS tackle coronavirus
‘Everyone has a role to play in our national effort to help the NHS tackle coronavirus, so it’s great to see Uber playing their part by offering meals and trips to work for our brilliant NHS staff,’ Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, commented on the news.
The news comes after a range of other businesses have also offered free services to NHS staff, including rival delivery service Deliveroo offering 500,000 free meals and parking company YourParkingSpace working to offer free parking for all NHS staff.
