Good News Worth Sharing: #ClapForNHS Has Inspired A Public Appeal For Donations To NHS Staff

After the nationwide success of clap for carers in showing gratitude for health workers, NHS Charities Together has launched a public appeal to extend that appreciation further with a monetary donation. The ‘One Million Claps’ campaign hopes to encourage one million people to donate £5 each to raise a total of £5million for NHS staff.

Announced this morning, NHS Charities Together – the union that represents NHS Charities funding our hospitals - launched the One Million Claps Campaign with a short film, voiced by David Walliams, featuring a version of We Will Rock You by Queen rewritten to say ‘NHS, we love you; We say, we say, thank you.’

People are encouraged to text ‘clap’ to 70507 – doing so will trigger a donation of £5 and a message of support. The fund will go towards food deliveries, overnight stays, kits and travel costs for NHS workers who have worked tirelessly to tackle the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19).

‘Like everyone else, I’ve been incredibly moved by the millions of us showing our public support for our health service over the last two Thursday evenings,’ Ellie Orton, chief executive of NHS Charities Together, said. ‘I really hope One Million Claps inspires those who can to give a donation that will make a real difference to the amazing staff and volunteers who are daily saving lives and battling against this horribly virus on our behalf.’

NHS Charities Together has 140 members - of the 250 NHS Charities across the UK – most of which help fund hospitals. ‘Collectively these [250] charities give £1 million every day to the NHS so that people can stay well for longer and get better faster,’ reads the NHS Charities Together Website. ‘In recent years NHS charities have funded major capital projects, pioneering research and medical equipment at our hospitals, helping patients access the best possible care when they need it most.’

The organisation also has a donation page on their website where you can choose to as much as you like. So far, NHS Charities Covid-19 Urgent Appeal has raised over £25million with a £100million goal.
