As our second week of UK lockdown draws to a close, it seems people are finding new and inventive ways to maintain social contact with the outside world. Most notably, neighbours having cuppas on their driveways together – at the government-sanctioned two metre distance, of course.
‘Our street now has a WhatsApp group and this morning one neighbour was struggling with loneliness, so earlier we all had a socially distanced cuppa and chat together,’ comedian Nick Doody tweeted earlier this week. ‘This stuff makes a difference. #lookaftereachother.’
After receiving near 70,000 likes, it seems Doody’s street wasn’t alone in their joint effort to combat loneliness. ‘We have a 4pm brew club, weather permitting,’ replied Toni Stennett Green from Warrington. ‘[It] makes all the difference.’
‘My close are doing the same,’ Mary Buckman, Buckinghamshire, added. ‘A new WhatsApp group and 11am coffee morning.’
And it’s not just morning brews people are still enjoying together from afar, Jenny O’Connor – from the East Midlands – noted that her street all sang happy birthday to a baby girl who turned one this week. ‘We all stood on our drives or hung out of the windows,’ she said.
We had socially distant cocktails over the wall with my neighbours this evening
‘Had socially distant cocktails over the wall with my neighbours this evening,’ another added.
Honestly, with the way communities are coming together to find new ways to socialise and get through this lockdown healthily, it makes you realise how important it is to actually get to know your neighbours.
Perhaps, if you haven’t already, now is the time to do some social distancing socialising.
