Good News Worth Sharing: A Milkman In London Has Received 1500 New Customers

A milkman in London has been inundated with new customers and support from his local community amid growing desires to shop locally and avoid busy supermarkets.

Steven Hayden, a milkman in Parker Diaries, told the BBC yesterday that he’s had a ‘superb’ response and has received lots of praise from people in his area. ‘We’ve actually got over 1500 new customers and that doesn’t include our regular customers that have increased their milk and what they want as well,’ he told BBC Breakfast.

‘They’ve been superb,’ Hayden continued. ‘I’ve even had a couple of people clap because I’ve been coming round and people have been saying “thank you so much” [and asking] is there anything they can do for me to help me. We’ve had thank you letters from adults and thank you letters from kids as well.’

Sharing his story on Twitter, Hayden’s experience has been welcomed by social media users as local food suppliers have proven essential amid food shortages at local big supermarkets. Last weekend, pictures circulated online showing huge queues outside major stores and has led to some implementing strict rules on the number of people allowed in each shop at one time.

And, in doing some more research into this much-loved milkman, it seems he is quite the celebrity in his local area. According to Epping Forest Guardian, he was chosen for two years running to switch the Wanstead Christmas lights on. Celebrating a ‘cleaner, greener, plastic free Christmas’ as their theme last year, Hayden was chosen for his positive impact on the environment.

‘I believe it’s an important message’, Hayden said at the time. ‘If more people used glass milk bottles, like the ones we deliver, it would be better for the environment.’

Honestly, we wish Hayden was our milkman – we’d certainly be the neighbours applauding out the window.
