Captain Tom Moore, the 99-year-old war veteran who has now raised £14million for the NHS, has received countless messages of support and thanks from people around the world. From thank you videos from NHS staff to birthday cards from fans, Tom was even joined by the British army on his final lap of his garden.
Posting videos on Twitter, celebrities, politicians and health workers alike have all sent messages of thanks to Tom – even being serenaded by Michael Ball over video chat who sang his favourite song, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
In fact, his nurse and physician - that continue to treat him since being hospitalised for hip problems last year - have put out a personal message of thanks, telling the BBC, ‘We’re very proud of him, we adore him and we are just honoured to be able to look after him because he’s always got a smile on his face, always asks how you are, he’s a true gentleman.’
On his final lap, completed today, Tom was accompanied by A Guard of Honour from soldiers in the 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment – sticking to social distancing rules of course- before giving a statement to the BBC.
‘I’m surrounded by the right sort of people, I feel fine and I hope you’re all feeling fine too,’ he said after completing his 2.5km walk. Most recently, he tweeted ‘all for you – NHS’ in response to the gratitude being sent his way.
And it’s much more than personalised videos, there has also been a huge campaign to get Tom a knighthood – to which he responded with much laughter and said, ‘It would be marvellous to have such an honour but I don’t expect anything like that.’
Another social media campaign saw a young girl start a trend to send him birthday cards using the hashtag #MakeACardForTom. The 8-year-old, Reegan Davies, posted a video on Twitter encouraging other kids to make virtual birthday cards thanking him for his efforts, which went on to trend on the social media site.
