A buzzy young brand wasn't given the kick-off spot at London Fashion Week. That particular honour went to Oxfam, who returned to the schedule after respectfully declining to show last season out of respect for the Queen, and proved, once and for all, that old is better than new with a star-studded catwalk that included a who's who of supermodels, TV stars, TikTok personalities and activists like Erin O'Connor, Munroe Bergdorf, Tasha Ghouri and Francis Bourgeois.
Every single look was pre-loved - sourced by the so-called 'queen of second-hand clothing' herself, veteran stylist Bay Garnett - and, the best news if you didn't manage to squeeze into the show venue underneath Phonica, the vinyl record shop in Soho, is that every single item will be available to buy on eBay.
With all proceeds from the week-long auction going to Oxfam - including its vital work in the aftermath of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria - now's the time to get bidding.
As Love Island has proved - the show is being sponsored for a second time by eBay - second-hand clothes can look cool and contemporary. (Viewers are clearly cottoning on. After the first season, searches for 'pre-loved clothes' experienced a whopping 1,600% increase.)
And on last night's catwalk, Bay's inimitable eye could be seen in the styling. This is the woman who got a fashion house (Chloé) to make a homage to a vintage banana top that she styled on the supermodel of the moment (Kate Moss).
It truly was a tour-de-force of personality-driven clothes, something that second-hand fashion has in spades. Munroe Bergdorf wore a witchy velvet dress, with a sculpted corset waist, that was the epitome of a current trend on TikTok: goth-girl fashion. Sandy Powell, the prolific costume designer who has been awarded this year's BAFTA Fellowship, a first for someone in her field, wore plum tailoring with a pussy-bow blouse.
Miquita Oliver looked sensationally cool in a flame red bomber jacket from Frank Usher. Daisy Lowe wore the same zippered mini that she wore on this issue's cover of Grazia - yes, really! - while Nikki Lily, the digital creator and YouTuber - wore a flower power shift dress. Francis Bourgeois, in the trainspotter's signature style, wore a peacock blue kilt with mustard socks. Tasha Ghouri, who signed on as an ambassador of eBay after wrapping last season's Love Island, wore a princess pink mini dress with a diamanté tiara.
The message? When second-hand looks this good, why would you ever buy brand new?
