Let's just start by saying the world has a new girl crush: hello, Jenna Ortega. The 20-year-old American actor is the star of Netflix series, Wednesday, unravelling the tales of Morticia and Gomez Addams' daughter as she starts high school. If you're one of the few people who haven't binge-watched the entire show in one sitting, don't worry, there are no spoilers here (apart from that it's a must-watch). And of course everyone has been talking about the outfits – with the high neck lace gown in that – now viral TikTok – school dance video being the star of the show. Even Mother Monster, Lady Gaga, has recreated Jenna's self-choreographed dance routine inspired by '80s goths.

Now, both Jenna's off-duty and on-duty as Wednesday Addams outfits have made the goth-girl trend one of the biggest around for winter. So, how do us mere mortals pull it off? We'll let the A-listers deliver some inspiration and then get down to the nitty gritty of how to wear it.

Jenna Ortega shows how tailored black pieces are an easy win with her shirt, tie and suit look – giving a subtle nod to her on-screen school uniform look for Nevermore. The super long floor-skimming maxi coat is what gives it that real gothic edge.

And it was only this week supermodel Kendall Jenner went out in a Rodarte satin and lace-detail maxi dress. Proving the black dress never fails for a night out.

Another star championing the black dress – with a LBD – is LIzzo. The singer stepped out in a corseted style (a very gothic touch) and kept the look on theme with matching black accessories.

The goth trend was of course seen on the runways with the likes of Rick Owens putting top-to-toe black outfits on the autumn/winter 2022 runway. Now, Marc Jacobs has also signed Kate Moss for yet another campaign, and the iconic model can be seen in a moody outfit complete with black patent power platforms.

So how do you wear the goth girl trend? First of all, do you have anything black in your wardrobe? Chances are 99.9% of you will say yes, so you're already well on the way. If not, we've found black dresses from Zara and Staud along with a stunning black faux fur maxi coat from Mango below that are ready to shop. But back to your own wardrobe – going for a full black outfit is the easiest way to tap into the goth-girl trend, so all you have to do is take your favourite black items and put them together.

Mixing different fabrics such as leather, vinyl, lace and satin will also add interest to the look. And adding details such as corsets, faux feathers, studs and even rhinestones will create the elevated goth-girl look Jenna and co. have perfected. We love any excuse to get to wear black at all times!
