Like most fashion trends caught in the cycle, we’ve come full circle with the bubble skirt - a silhouette first introduced in the 1950s, revived in the '80s, and embraced once again in the early 2000s. Now, thanks to TikTok-fuelled nostalgia and the ongoing Y2K revival, the bubble skirt is enjoying its fourth resurgence. Seen on the runways of Simone Rocha, Molly Goddard, and Miu Miu, the style has been reimagined with a modern twist - think micro hemlines and, of course, exaggerated volume. While the early 2000s versions leaned into satin, ivory tones, and pastels, the 2025 take is all about puffed-up shapes paired with sharp flats and oversized blazers.
Trends eventually trickle into the high street and the latest brand to embrace bubble hems is Marks & Spencer. Its Pure Cotton Bubble Hem Midaxi Dress, £49.50, is a masterclass in taking a trend and elevating it to a timeless staple you can have in your wardrobe, one you'll wear long past the trend's expiry date. The details in this dress are what make it so great with a midaxi length, subtle bubble hem, sleeveless bodice and cut-out back.

M&S' take on the bubble hem trend very much keeps in line with all its other pieces - sophisticated and timeless. The dress has a flattering midaxi length, sleeveless top that drapes into a bubble hemmed bottom and open back. Style with ballet flats or kitten heels, and layer up with a trench coat where necessary.
Styling a bubble hem doesn't necessarily mean you have to combat its volume with toned-down accessories. Instead, lean into the more-is-more maximalism and pair the dress with pops of red and woven ballet flats. Or, add a pair of gold earrings and a raffia bag (maybe even the cult Dragon Diffusion tote) for a look that feels like it should be worn somewhere hot. Alternatively, if you want to add texture and layer up your outfit, add a cropped leather jacket or throw on a knit cardigan over your shoulders.
The M&S dress is a perfect example of how high street fashion can still surprise us, especially when it includes details like a chic design, multiple different length options (the dress is available in petite, regular and tall), and a monochrome colourway. The bubble hem might have couture origins, but M&S have cleverly reworked the style with wearability, ease and accessibility in mind.
