The Rugby Shirt Has Renewed Its Fashion Credentials, According To Gigi Hadid

It's a yes from us.

Golf jumpers, football scarves and tennis skirts have all had a 'fashion moment'. Up next? The rugby shirt, which has had its fashion credentials renewed this season thanks to Gigi Hadid. Exiting a show in Paris, Hadid wore the lo-fi combination of a rugby shirt, combat trousers, penny loafers and a black leather coat. The effect was effortless but still interesting (the same outfit wouldn't have looked as, for want of a better word, cool with a Breton, for example).

Princess Diana famously wore rugby-style stripes as an off-duty outfit, choosing pastel pink and powder blue. Kendall Jenner, meanwhile, wore her own version more recently, styling a shirt of neutral stripes with jeans and Birkenstocks; another combination to copy when the weather turns warm enough to not warrant a jacket.

The renaissance of rugby shirts shouldn't come as a surprise. Last year's knitwear hit, after all, was the polo jumper, while the kind of cable-knit sweater vest that your parents might have worn to play a round of golf is also having its moment in the sun. Rihanna also wore a football jersey in January, a pale blue style from Martine Rose, which proved that sports are officially fair game when it comes to fashion.
