This Sporty Sweatshirt Is Surprisingly One Of The Biggest Trends For Autumn

Football shirts have been on a winning streak for the past few seasons but another sport’s kit is about to turn your head: rugby.

These cute collared sweatshirts have grown in popularity of late thanks to Miu Miu, Prada and Tommy Hilfiger's autumns/winter '24 collections, all of which saw preppy polos, rugby shirts and varsity jackets across the catwalks. Not only have they been repped by tastemakers including Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber, rugby shirts were also spotted at the latest round of shows at Copenhagen Fashion Week. One show-goer's outfit rehabilitated the rugby shirt's public school image almost entirely, wearing it with the unlikely bottom half of a lace skirt, frilly ankle socks and buckled sandals - proving, definitively, that it's more than capable of being polished.

'I've gone for the We The Free Taylee polo in yellow and off white, the fabric is so soft and east to wear, this is an extra-small but the fit's really oversized so gives a slouchy feel. I love the preppy-ness of a Rugby collar and will be wearing mine with a suede maxi skirt for a boho-preppy hybrid trend or just with jeans for casual, working-from-home days.' says Julia.

Hadid, meanwhile, wore hers with the lo-fi combination of combat trousers, penny loafers and a black leather coat in Paris. The effect was effortless but still interesting (the same outfit wouldn't have looked as, for want of a better word, cool with a Breton, for example).

Even Princess Diana famously wore rugby-style stripes as an off-duty outfit, choosing pastel pink and powder blue. The modern-day take courtesy of Kendall Jenner? A shirt of neutral stripes with jeans and Birkenstocks; another combination to copy when the weather dips but you're not quite ready for a jacket.

The renaissance of rugby shirts shouldn't come as a surprise. Polo jumpers have proved to be a major knitwear hit, while the kind of cable-knit sweater vest that your parents might have worn to play a round of golf is also having its moment in the sun.
