As someone whose height falls frustratingly short of the average, I'm all too familiar with the crushing disappointment of finding the perfect pair of jeans - only to realise they puddle around the ankles like an unfortunate denim tragedy. A trip to the tailors is an option, but who wants to fork out an extortionate amount just to make jeans actually wearable? Thankfully, fashion's finest have taken notes and more and more brands are stocking pairs of the best petite jeans. So, you can say hello to denim that actually fits - no DIY hemming required.

Petite jeans aren’t just about a shorter inseam - they’re meticulously proportioned to complement a smaller frame, meaning no awkward knee-bunching, no overwhelming silhouettes, and no compromising on style. Brands like M&S, River Island, and FRAME (Kate Middleton’s go-to denim brand) have petite jeans aplenty, in a range of sizes and styles. From baggy to flared jeans, straight to skinny jeans, there's sure to be pair of denim jeans that are a perfect fit for you - even if you are vertically, well, challenged.

Best Petite Jeans For Women, At A Glance

In terms of trends, the great skinny-jean revival (as made apparent by Miu Miu and Alexander McQueen runways) may be divisive, but one thing remains clear; timeless cuts like flared and straight-leg are here to stay. To help narrow things down, I've searched for hours and hours (and years), and have found the best petite jeans that you can buy right now, because no one should have to compromise on finding the perfect denim.

How we tested the best petite jeans for women

Finding the perfect pair of petite jeans was no small feat, and as a fashion commerce writer I took it upon myself to put a serious number of different styles through its paces - documenting every try-on with photos, of course. All in the name of journalistic integrity (and, let’s be honest, the pursuit of my dream jeans).

After testing countless pairs (I think I maybe tried over 20?) Only 15 made the cut. Each pair was scrutinised for fit, proportions and silhouette - because, as any petite person probably knows already, it's not just about leg length, it's about balance too. Comfort was non-negotiable, so stiff, unyielding denim didn't stand a chance, while fabric was assessed for softness, durability and that elusive premium feel (great denim doesn't have to come with a huge price tag). Sizing was also a key factor as being petite doesn't mean one-size-fits-all.

The result, you ask? An edit of the best petite jeans, curated by me, to hopefully help you avoid that soul-crushing feeling of putting on yet another pair of jeans and them not fitting properly. Shop the best petite jeans, from high street to high-end, below.

Best overall petite jeans

Abercrombie, High Rise Wide Leg JeanAbercrombie
Price: $56.99 (was £75)

www.abercrombie.com

Abercrombie's denim are among the best on the high street, and its petite styles are a real standout. You'll find that most pairs of Abercrombie jeans come in a range of leg-length sizes, including short, regular and long - an absolute godsend for us petite individuals. The denim of Abercrombie jeans also sits in that sweet spot between rigid enough to hold its shape but relaxed enough to not dig in in all the wrong places (like the waistband).

Gemma says: 'When I look for a good pair of jeans, the things that really matter to me include a leg length that doesn't drag on the ground (which is a regular occurrence if you're under 5'3") and a zipper waistband because I find the buttons are such a faff. At this point I've told pretty much everyone I know to invest in a pair of Abercrombie jeans because of the fit, length, colour options, the list could go on.'

Pros

  • The short length is the perfect size for someone who's 5'4" or below
  • Available in a regular or a 'Curve Love' size which means there's added room through the hips and waist
  • Flattering high-rise fit

Cons

  • Some sizes are often out of stock due to popularity

Best petite horseshoe jeans

Horseshoe jeans have caused quite a stir in the fashion world, with its marmite voluminous tapered leg that goes out at the thigh and then tapers back in. M&S' iteration of the trending shape boasts a flattering mid-rise waist, as well as five pockets, zip fastening and a touch of stretch. Plus, like most of M&S denim, the jeans are available in three different lengths, including petite.

Gemma says: 'I love M&S jeans so am not surprised that its horseshoe jeans are making the list. Take your usual size in these jeans as they come up quite well-fitting.'

Pros

  • Trending 'horseshoe' style
  • Flattering mid-rise waist
  • Made from a super soft denim

Best petite wide leg jeans

Paige, Sasha Petite Wide Leg JeanPaige

Paige's petite jeans are a great option if you're after a higher-end pair of jeans and don't want to compromise on excellent quality. The 'Sasha' style features a high-rise wide leg and offers a more relaxed denim compared to other, stiffer, counterparts. Paige's denim comes in a vintage-inspired wash with natural fading that makes the denim look like it's been lovingly worn-in.

Gemma says: 'Paige's wide leg jeans are perfect for me as I find it difficult to get a pair of jeans that straddles the line between wide leg and drowning me with a wide leg that's far too big for my frame. Plus the different denim washes the brand offers are, in my opinion, the most timeless and easy to style shades of blue.'

Pros

  • Great selection of blue-washed denim
  • The material feels perfectly lived-in from the first wear
  • Sits at the natural waist

Cons

  • Can still come up long on shorter frames thanks to its 28" inseam

Best Levi's jeans for petites

Levi's, Women's 501 Crop JeansAmazon

When you think of a pair of iconic jeans, what do you think of? Of course, the only correct answer is the Levi's 501. A jean that has evolved from a workwear staple to fashion icon, the 501 jeans are identifiable due to its button fly and signature straight leg.

Gemma says: 'Although the inseam of these Levi's 501's says 30", it's a real petite-girl hack to buy a pair of jeans that are supposedly 'cropped' which, voila, makes them the perfect length for anyone under 5'4". I've found this pair on Amazon that are really affordable and come in so many different colours, whether you're wanting a light wash blue, indigo or black.'

Pros

  • Levi's 501 classic design
  • Cropped hem makes for the perfect fit for petites

Citizens of Humanity jeans have been worn by the likes of EmRata, Barbara Palvin and Rihanna - who actually wore this exact pair of Ayla jeans when in New York in 2023. The best-selling Ayla style is now available in a petite length, which means that now we too can invest in the exact pair of jeans worn by Rihanna. As cream jeans go, these are one of the best, they're most definitely not see-through and are in the most perfect eggshell cream white that's easy to style.

Pros

  • Inspired by a reworked vintage silhouette
  • Roomy cuffed leg that can also be worn uncuffed
  • Heavyweight rigid cotton with an easy drape

Best leopard print petite jeans

Nobody's Child, Leopard Print Tapered Straight Leg JeansNobody's Child

Black, blue and cream denim are all extremely versatile, and perhaps even more importantly - timeless. However, if you're on a mission to make your denim feel, well, more fun, leopard print jeans are the way to go. Think a mixture of eclectic Scandi style and the mob-wife trend, leopard print jeans are a trend that's here to stay. This pair from Nobody's Child are, without a doubt, the best for petites, even though they're not technically marketed as that.

Gemma says: 'I almost can never shop from the regular jean section, rather than buying a pair of jeans that have been specifically marketed as 'petite', so these Nobody's Child jeans were a very welcome surprise. On the website it says they come up slightly large but I'd say they come up true to size instead, and (thankfully) don't drown my legs. They're also super comfortable and don't have that stiff, crunchy denim feel some high street pairs have.'

Pros

  • Stylish tapered leg
  • Made from a denim that's not too rigid but also not too stretchy
  • Flattering high-rise waist

Cons

  • Only available in clothes size (e.g. UK 8, 10, 12) as opposed to waist sizes (e.g. 24", 25")

Best petite turn-up jeans

AGOLDE, Dame High Rise Wide Leg Petite JeansAGOLDE

Turn-up jeans are the latest denim trend, following the success of jeans like barrel and carrot. Representing a more calculated way to wear denim, as opposed to jeans that are so baggy they pool around your ankles, turn-up jeans are an on-trend way to save yourself from soggy hems, and, still look great. This pair from AGOLDE are the best petite turn-up jeans I've found, and feature a high-rise waist and wide-leg fit.

Pros

  • Flattering high waist fit
  • Relaxed cut through the hips which makes them incredibly comfortable
  • Made from zero stretch regenerative cotton that grows softer with each wear

Cons

  • Petite inseam is 29.5" so the jeans still may come up long on individuals with a smaller inseam

Best stretch petite jeans

Another fan favourite from M&S - the wide-leg jean. These jeans come in six different washes (including ecru) and are stocked in extra short, short, regular and long. They're stylish, but don't compromise comfort, thanks to their stretch denim material. The medium indigo wash lends itself to a more casual way of styling, so team with a pair of ballet flats, a white t-shirt and trench coat.

Gemma says: 'For the £35 price tag, the M&S Wide-Leg jeans feel surprisingly great quality. They're not the thickest of denim, but that's what gives it a great stretch. The important thing for me was that the jeans aren't clingy, but stretchy, and M&S have nailed the brief when it comes to this. Keep to your normal size too, the soft denim means you won't need to size up at all.'

Pros

  • Incredibly comfortable thanks to its stretchy denim
  • Made using a soft cotton-rich material
  • Fits loose at the legs

Cons

  • Due to its stretchy denim it can start to sag after a few washes

Best petite jeans FAQs

What inseam length is best for petites?

When it comes to finding the best inseam length, my advice would be to look at proportion over everything. Generally speaking, an inseam of 25-29" works best, depending on whether you're after an ankle-grazing moment, turn-up, or puddle-length style. The key is also to avoid said puddle style - excess fabric at the ankles can drown your frame and make it look shorter.

What rise should petites wear?

When it comes to a jean's rise, petites may find it best to reach for high-waisted everything - and here's why. A high-rise creates the illusion of longer legs (a girl can dream) by drawing the eye upward and defining the waist. Mid-rise can work well too, especially if you prefer a more relaxed fit. Low-rise is a slightly trickier one as it can shorten the torso and throw off proportions.

How do I keep petite jeans from looking too cropped or too long?

Petite jeans that hit just at the right length can feel like an impossible find. The trick is to know your ideal inseam (generally speaking it will be anywhere between 25-29") and choose styles that go with the footwear you normally wear. If your jeans are looking to cropped, try a straight or slim-leg cut rather than a super skinny, which might be exaggerating your shortness. Alternatively, if your jeans are too long, don't be afraid to tailor the trousers, whether that be taking them to a professional or DIY-ing it.

Can petite women wear wide-leg or baggy jeans?

Absolutely - it's all about the styling. If you can, opt for a high-waisted fit to elongate your legs and balance out the wide-leg volume. Make sure the length just skims the floor, too, otherwise your jeans may swamp you. Style wide-leg or baggy jeans with a tucked-in shirt, tank or bodysuit.

What brands make the best petite jeans?

Not all brands are necessarily made equal, but luckily, some brands just get it. A couple of my personal favourites include Abercrombie's styles, which regardless of the shape, are always available in petite lengths, and M&S' jeans, which are often sold in both extra short and short.

Can petite women wear oversized or boyfriend jeans?

Petite women can of course style oversized and boyfriend jeans. A high-waisted fit will keep your legs looking long, and make sure the jeans have a slight taper or structured shape to avoid looking swamped in fabric. A cropped length (or a turn-up hem) stops the jeans from feeling oversized, and pairing them with a fitted top or tucked-in knit helps balance the volume.

How do I shop petite jeans online without trying them on?

Shopping for petite jeans online without trying them on can be tricky. Knowing your measurements, rather than just your size, is also going to help as sizing does vary across brands. When looking online you're going to want to check the inseam length to avoid excess fabric or having to get them tailored. Plus, always read reviews, particularly from fellow petites to see if the fit runs long, short or just right.

What leg jeans should someone 5ft 2" wear?

If you're 5'2" the best jean style is one that will make your legs look longer and balance out your top and bottom proportions. A high-waisted wide or straight leg is always a failsafe option. If you're into a more trendy style, you can of course go for a petite barrel jean or flared style, and then pair it with heeled boots or platform trainers.
