Whatever you love most about autumn, plummeting temperatures is possibly not high on your list. While that might mean you have to wave goodbye to cotton poplin dresses for another year, it also gives some of life's sartorial heroes the chance to shine again – namely, coats, knitwear, boots and tights. There's always something vaguely thrilling about a new autumn wardrobe and, luckily, this year's is looking better than ever.
So, what are this season's biggest trends? Well, from how to actually wear sheer layers to tweed co-ords and the rise of the mini skirt, we've got everything you need to know about getting dressed this autumn – and beyond.
Go Sheer
From Dior to Simone Rocha, designers were fixated on transparent layers, whether that be in the form of entirely sheer dresses or wisps of tulle and organza offering glimpses of what lies underneath. By its very nature, this is a difficult trend to incorporate into your everyday life but that doesn't mean you should rule it out. Try Oasis' sheer blouse, layered over a black polo neck by day, which you could switch for a lacy bralette for night. It's easier than you might think.
Try Tweed
Where Chanel goes we all want to follow and, in terms of excellent tweed combos, the fashion house did not disappoint for autumn/winter 2021. In fact, the brand's influence is such that everyone is wearing bouclé co-ords this season, which make for an easy outfit you don't need to think about. Just add a tee or polo neck underneath.
Swap Your Skinnies
Designers including Hermès, Molly Goddard and Dior agreed on one thing this season: skinny jeans are out, wide-legs are in. Not only is this great news for our comfort levels, it also allows for greater versatility. Try this black denim pair with T-shirts tucked in, layered under chunky knits. The wide-leg fit means you can even wear your favourite knee-high boots underneath.
Make It Mini
The mini skirt hasn't enjoyed so much attention since the '60s, with the likes of Versace, Fendi, Valentino and Lanvin all championing the shorter length for autumn/winter. One of the best (and easiest) ways to wear it? With an oversized jumper and either boots or flats. Or, for a smarter take on the trend, pair with a matching jacket. It's the new power suit.
Lashings Of Leather
Autumn is really when leather gets its moment in the spotlight – after all, it's an unthinkable fabric to try in the summer months. From pinafore dresses (they make layering infinitely easier) to chic pencil skirts, this is a quick-fire way to creating polished outfits without the faff.
Choose Your Coat
Few things are as satisfying as finding a truly great coat that you know will last for years to come. You need, therefore, to look for timeless styles that aren't a flash-in-the-pan trend but still feel fresh. Enter this coat. It has an ageless silhouette, while the balloon sleeves give it that stylish twist without being too much.
Business Is Bright
The humble suit has had a makeover for this season. Forget stuffy workwear you'd rather avoid, the new tailoring is bright, bold and just as suitable for weekends as it is for meetings. Rainbow brights were everywhere from Loewe to Roksanda and this wide-leg trouser suit is an excellent way to tap into the trend.
