The Autumn Outfit That Everyone Is Wearing Is So Easy To Copy From Your Own Wardrobe

Knit + miniskirt = perfection.

Pernille Teisbaek

This time of year is all types of confusing. With festive treats already filling the supermarket aisles - we're not complaining, but Halloween's not even here yet - it's easy to get ahead of ourselves. When it comes to fashion, the confusion continues as some people are spotted in winter woolies and others are still clinging onto summer dresses. It's a fun time to play around with some of autumn's new offerings, but that doesn't mean we have to throw on every layer like Joey Tribbiani.

There's an easy way to beat this in-between phase, however, and some of the most stylish women seem to have reached a consensus about the best fashion formula: a jumper + a miniskirt. And the best thing about it is that it can be imitated from what's already in your wardrobe.

Actor Laura Harrier wore the pairing to attend Louis Vuitton, with the label's green mini and striped jumper. A pair of knee-highs completed the look, but a flat ankle boot would look just as good.

Next up Pernille Teisbaek, who wore her chunky fisherman's knit with a teeny-weeny orange mini at Copenhagen Fashion Week. Can we all just take a moment to admire the jumper? Look. At. It. (& Daughter has similarly bulky styles that get our seal of approval.) The takeaway from this look is the fact that the chunkiness of your jumper should balance out the barely-there nature of your bottom half. And to copy the whole vibe, match your footwear (like Teisbaek's Prada slingbacks) to your skirt.

We can always rely on Anne-Laure Mais, founder of Musier Paris, to deliver the goods when it comes to je ne sais quois. Wearing Dior for the show this month, she made a strong case for the pairing of a navy turtleneck and matching leather miniskirt. When it gets a chillier, simply pop a blazer over the top and wear with opaque tights.

While the mini has gained a lot of attention recently (Miu Miu showed a micro version on the catwalk for SS22), if you prefer a slightly longer length, that's also ok. Better than ok, in fact. Sylvie Mus shows exactly how to do it with a slip skirt (the 2019 favourite that is back, FYI) and an oversized polo neck, proving that classic neutrals are sometimes the best way forward.

You've got this weekend to start digging through your wardrobe. And, if you really can't find anything that works, then shop the look from our below edit...
