We're calling it, trench coat weather is here! EmRata's just been spotted sporting hers with an off-white tracksuit and New Balances. And Grazia's fashion team aren't find behind, wearing the perfect transitional coat to the office as the weather's taken a colder turn over the past week.

That's right, don't get your puffer coats out of storage quite yet because we're still in the mood for a lighter layer. But what style of trench coat is right for 2023? While a classic beige gabardine is always a firm favourite, this year, we're seeing alternative colours, prints and materials enter the chat. We're talking leather coats (as worn by Alexa Chung, EmRata and Zoë Kravitz), denim and high-shine vinyl, to name a few.

At fashion month so far, show-goers have been wearing theirs with everything from denim maxi skirts - a key trend this year thanks to Y2K - to tailored pieces and, well, practically any outfit going. Because when it comes to the humble trench, you can guarantee it'll work with any look.

But if there's one rule to stick to when it comes to finding a trench for 2023, it's all about the length. Forget short styles that swing around (or above) your knees, it's all about the long maxi versions, often in an oversized fit. No matter your style, budget, size or height, we've found the best trench coats to snap up from the likes of Claudie Pierlot, Zara and Tôteme.

What Are Trench Coats Made From?

We've all seen the classic tan trench coats that come out every spring and autumn - they're an essential piece of a transitional wardrobe. But what are these staples really made out of? Typically, they're crafted from waterproof or water-resistant materials such as cotton gabardine, polyester, or a blend of materials.

Looking for designer coats to invest in? You'll find that some luxury trench coats also use high-quality leather or suede.

Are There Different Styles Of Trench Coats?

Of course, like many coats nowadays styles change and fashion trends come in and out, we've seen an increase in the different styles of trench coats. The classic choice you'll find is with a double-breasted front and wide lapels in a tan or camel colour. Now, you can venture into different lengths, fabrics and cuts with your trench coat - whatever suits your style.

More modern updates include different lengths of coat (full-length, mid-length, short), colours (classic khaki, black, navy, and even some monochrome or patterned options), and variations in design details - even patent trench coats are a choice. Some trench coats may have modern updates, while others maintain a more traditional look.
