Finally some good news for your weary lockdown wardrobe, Ugg’s collaboration with Molly Goddard is available to shop now.
Anticipation has been high for this unlikely power pairing since Goddard’s SS21 show at London Fashion Week last September. On the runway, the designer paired her signature mille-feuille tulles, supercharged ruffles and shirred dresses with platform clogs and fluffy shearling mules. The takeaway? Not all slippers are born equal - these ones are way too cool to be kept indoors.
In the collection you’ll find those catwalk styles in emerald and navy, deep red and pink. They’re joined by Goddard’s own take on the Ugg Mini boot (a style which has enjoyed something of a revival in recent months, seen on the likes of Emily Ratajkowski, Joan Smalls and Irina Shayk) reimagined with graphic floral appliqués. Each style in the capsule epitomises the off-beat femininity that has established Goddard as one of British fashion’s most thrilling talents. PSA to any A-listers doing the virtual awards season rounds right now, you should be wearing these (can't you see Goddard fan Nicola Coughlan wearing them?).
The collection marks the latest chapter in Ugg’s stealthy fashion takeover. Not only have the classic Ugg boots (the ones championed by Kate Moss and Sienna Miller in the early Noughties) enjoyed a revival among a new generation of fans, but the Californian brand has form collaborating with some of fashion’s most exciting labels-to-know, like Eckhaus Latta and Y/Project. Last year’s collaboration with Telfar Clemens included a sheepskin version of his cult shopper – fondly anointed the ‘Bushwick Birkin’ among fans – that predictably set Instagram alight.
No doubt the Goddard collection will ignite similar enthusiasm. With its exaggerated details and paintbox palette, the Ugg x Molly Goddard collection would be a fun addition to anyone’s closet in a normal year; right now, however, it feels particularly pertinent, straddling the needs of lockdown and re-entry wardrobes perfectly, proving that you don't need to make an effort to make an impact.
Because, sure, these styles are cosy (those flatform clogs, for instance, have a sheepskin insole) making them a no-brainer WFH-hero but they’re also a much-needed serotonin shot ideal for those first tentative steps back into reality. After all, who could slip on a pair of coral pink curly shearling slippers and not feel more buoyant? Who would put on those emerald clogs with their 9cm platforms and not feel instantly elevated (in every sense)? And more to the point, who would want to waste any of these shoes on Zoom calls alone? The return of waist-down dressing starts here.
