In just seven years, Self Portrait has accomplished the sort of success that takes most fashion brands decades to replicate. Michelle Obama, the Duchess of Cambridge, Meghan Markle, Reese Witherspoon, Zendaya, Rachel McAdams and Priyanka Chopra are just some of the famous faces who have Self Portrait’s dresses hanging in their wardrobes. They might all be interested to know, then, either for younger relatives or their own children, that the brand has just launched children’s clothes for the very first time.
There are 21 different styles across seven sizes, ranging from 3-12 years. From taffeta party dresses to little ruffle shirts to mesh capes, this collection is so appealing you’ll wish it came in adult sizes, too.
‘Since starting my brand 7 years ago, I have always dreamed of someday translating what Self-Portrait represents for a younger generation,’ says Han Chong, founder and creative director. ‘Now that the brand is established, it felt like the perfect moment to bring our design codes and our joyful and uplifting sensibility to little people around the world. From the beginning I have been treating Self-Portrait Kids as its own standalone brand - catering to the individual needs and dreams of children, focusing on happy pieces that allow kids to truly be, and feel like, themselves, but with the guaranteed attention to quality and craft that has become synonymous with our brand.’
This range will prove especially helpful for those looking for flower girl options, mini bridesmaid dresses or just something special for their child to wear to an event. Prices start at £80, bridging that gap between high street collections and designer offerings.
This is the latest in a new wave of kids' collections. On Monday, & Other Stories launched its debut children's range and, a few weeks ago, Rejina Pyo also made her foray into clothes for little ones.
It's already been a big year for Self Portrait. The brand recruited Phoebe Dynevor as its campaign star earlier this year, shortly followed by the one and only Kate Moss. The Kids range launches today and, given that some styles are already low in stock, it’s clearly a hit. For Chong, though, there’s only one way he’ll be assessing the new collection’s popularity. ‘I can’t wait to hear what the kids think!’
