Attention! The women of New York - actually just women who attended New York Fashion Week - are advocating a new knitwear trend. It's something that you've probably already got a version of in your wardrobe. It's, drumroll please, the sexy sweater dress!

Spotted on Alexa Chung, who wore hers to Proenza Schouler, and Lila Grace Moss Hack, this isn't a sweater dress that sits on the cosy end of the spectrum. No no. Alexa's was open weave - seriously open weave - creating a golden net that flashed her black bra and knickers. Flinging a faux-fur collared coat over the top, it was the ultimate in reveal-and-conceal dressing.

Lila Grace wore a very similar outfit formula, pairing her see-through sweater dress with high-waisted knickers, a stretch of bare leg and a pointed pair of cowboy boots. Yee haw! If you want to try the trend but don't want people to see your underwear - fair enough - simply wear your sexy sweater dress with a black under-slip.

They also made an appearance on the runways of New York. At Michael Kors, Jill Kortleve wore another version of a sexy sweater dress - a one-sleeved number that was styled with a low-slung coin belt à la Gloria Steinem. With the temperature starting to turn slightly more mild, the sexy sweater dress (worn with a winter coat now and a spring jacket later) could be the weather-appropriate outfit you can rely on.
