When it comes to skincare, I’m something of a maximalist. I can’t help it, it’s my job to test products, so it’s fair to say I’ve amassed more than just one or two favourites over the last few years. That said, every so often I’m reminded that sometimes, less is more. Post-Christmas, I decided to strip things back and take a more minimalist approach - my complexion was looking dull and blotchy - usually a sign I’ve overwhelmed it with too many active ingredients. Alongside too many glasses of Champagne, of course.

So, back to basics. My stripped-back routine includes a hard-working cleanser, a nourishing moisturiser, a retinol (used every third night) and a spot treatment for my hormonal blemishes. It also includes, without fail, an SPF by day and then just one non-negotiable active day treatment which, for me, has always been vitamin C (I did say I'm a maximalist). As far as I'm concerned, Sarah Chapman’s Vitamin C Power 1, £72 is among the best. If aiding glow (and lots of it) is your MO, then this could become one of the best things you'll add to your routine.

What does the Sarah Chapman Vitamin C Power 1 do?

What does vitamin C do for your skin? In short, a lot. This one contains two forms of vitamin C (one oil-soluble, the other water-soluble), formulated to ‘brighten the complexion, improve hyperpigmentation and boost collagen production.’ There’s also EGT Amino Acids in there, which work to enhance the efficacy of vitamin C for serious illumination. Redness prone? Bonus points for the inclusion of soothing niacinamide. And lest we forget potent tranexamic acid, which is ideal for whipping away sunspots and pigmentation.

  • Those with sensitive skin may benefit from taking a phased approach to a new vitamin C

How to use Sarah Chapman Vitamin C Power 1

I apply this each morning after cleansing. Around two pumps smoothed over my entire face feels like a generous amount. I’m careful to avoid my delicate (and extra sensitive) eye area and I’ll always follow with my moisturiser and an SPF to lock it all in.

Our verdict

Rachael Martin, beauty editor:

'Once you try this you won’t go back - I've got numerous friends hooked on the stuff. The texture is gloriously lightweight with none of the greasy, oily feeling that so often comes with vitamin C serums. It melts into skin beautifully, plays well under make-up and such a small amount tends to go a long way. In terms of results, my skin appeared instantly brighter and more hydrated, especially around my forehead and my cheekbones. The tone and texture of my complexion became more even around the three week mark - although it is worth noting that my skin turns slightly red upon application for a few minutes. My only qualm is that this definitely is an expensive purchase. But for such dramatic results I deem it a worthy one - especially if you can nab it in the sale.
