Face rollers have played a role in beauty rituals for some time. Rooted in Chinese medicine, traditional derma rollers made from jade have been used for centuries for their natural cooling properties that help aid muscle relief during massage. The jade stone itself is one of the most treasured in China and represents healing and protection. Making its way from East to West, face rolling has now become a popular step in many a beauty enthusiast's skincare routine.
Designed to be used to gently massage the face, face rollers can take down puffiness, stimulate lymphatic drainage to get rid of toxins and increase blood circulation to bolster glow. ‘Using your hands to really work product into the skin is great, but you can also use a facial tool to dial it up,’ says founder of Face Gym, Inge Theron, ‘a gold or jade roller will further encourage production absorption, skin renewal and collagen production.’ What’s more, the act of massaging your face encourages you to take a moment for yourself – marrying skincare with self-care. ‘When it comes to the body, it’s a well-known fact that massaging or brushing product into the skin, rather than just slapping it on, will maximise the benefits for your skin tone and texture. The same goes for your face!’
With so many face rollers available on the market, there’s a tool out there for everyone - targeting your specific skincare needs. Whether it is a face needle roller to mimic micro-needling, a rose quartz face roller for soothing skin or a jade roller to reduce puffiness – we have you covered with our curated edit below.
How to use a face roller
'You can do it anytime but I recommend including it into your morning or evening routine,' says Theron. 'The bottom line is that you need to do it daily or at least 4 times a week, so find a time that works for you, carve out 10-15 minutes in your day, make it a daily ritual, a minute for you to do something for yourself.'
1) Apply product: Whether you choose to use a facial oil, serum, or moisturiser, ensure the product has enough slip on the skin to reduce the chance of the roller puling.
2) Start at the neck: Work from the neck and roll in an upwards motion. Roll several times in the same motion, rather than back and forth.
3) Move onto the jawline: From the jawline, roll to the ear and you can always continue the motion all the way to the cheekbone. Use gentle pressure.
4) Onto the forehead: Begin at the centre of the forehead and roll towards the temples, ensuring you're still using an upwards motion. This will be similar to if you were to gently use your hands to pull the skin taut.
5) Finally move to the eyebrows: Roll the face roller over your eyebrows, in a horizontal direction. This is also a great way to relieve headaches.
Face Roller Benefits
As previously mentioned, there are multiple benefits. 'Focusing on the health and strength of your facial muscles as part of your self-care routine will pay dividends when it comes to the appearance of key focus areas like the jawline, forehead and eye area' says Theron.
Face rolling stimulates blood flow, provides nutrients to the skin and releases facial tension, which in turn gives you a healthier, happier complexion. Another major perk of face rollers is lymphatic drainage, as the tool can help to remove toxins and drain excess fluid from the face - taking down any puffiness.
