This hard-shell case is designed to fit between their seat and the one in front, doubling as a seat extender for long-haul flights. We love its simplicity and the fact that it comes with stickers, including letters for complete personalisation. When your little one is ready to snooze, you can install the case's padding to make it even more comfortable. The wheels are incredibly easy to manoeuvre, even with a child on top, and we were impressed by how smoothly it glides through the terminal. Additionally, it comes with a contrasting orange lead, making it easy for an adult to pull, especially after the pram has been checked in.

Pros

  • Great for long-haul flights
  • Bundle comes with a matching rucksack
  • Easy to pull
  • Hard case

Cons

  • Doesn't fit under all airline seats - always check with the airline

Pellianni City SuitcaseCredit: Pellianni

When it comes to design, this case is our favourite kids luggage. It exudes luxury and premium quality with its charming city print, mustard colouring, and refined corners. This case has a telescopic handle with four height adjustments and 360 rotating wheels; this is the easiest case for children to navigate independently. We love the divider inside that prevents everything from spilling out when your little one eagerly reaches their destination. It’s also a practical spot to store smaller items like socks and underwear. Plus, if space is tight, you can easily remove the divider.

Pros

  • Three colour options
  • Premium quality
  • Reinforced corners
  • Four wheels that can be turned 360º
  • Can be used independently with ease

Cons

  • This case is more suitable as a children's suitcase than as a cabin bag.

Best ride-on kids luggage for toddlers

Samsonite Mickey Mouse Dream2Go Rolling LuggageCredit: Disney

There's only one way to travel through the airport as a toddler: with your feet up and a stressed-out parent dragging you along, trying to find the correct terminal. We love the handles that help little ones stay securely on the ride-on while whizzing around, which is further helped by the dipped design. Plus, if they love Disney, this is a winner.

Pros

  • Removable shoulder strap
  • Hard shell with an adorable Disney design
  • Solid design
  • High-quality locks

Cons

  • The ride-on feature is not suitable for kids over six

Best kids luggage for pre-teens

New Storia Credit: Kipling

What's not to love about this Minion design? With the new movie hitting cinemas this summer, we anticipate Minions will dominate the children's fashion world. Our favourite feature of this case is the abundance of compartments and pockets. We especially loved the front pocket, which is perfect for keeping travel documents easily accessible. We found this case incredibly easy to manoeuvre, even on uneven surfaces. While we wouldn't recommend it for young children, as it may still be difficult for them to use independently, we think it’s perfect for tweens.

Pros

  • Lots of compartments
  • Easy to use
  • Premium quality
  • Fun design

Cons

  • Better suited to slightly older children
Dimensions:45 x 20 x 40.5 cm

Best kids luggage ride on for pre-schoolers

Trike Suitcase: Teal GreenCredit: Micro scooters

One of our biggest gripes with ride-along suitcases is that whilst they are fantastic for younger children, when your little one reaches preschool age, naturally, ride-along becomes a lot harder to pull. And whilst, at this age, they are more than capable of walking through the airport, sometimes it's simply easier to just literally drag them along. This is when this trike breaks the mould. The Micro Eazy suitcase is truly multi-functional. It can be used as a conventional pull case with a child over the age of 18 months on top or as a trike. This means that when you arrive at your destination, you can remove the case, and your child can ride around, removing the need for a travel stroller.

Pros

  • Innovative design
  • Trike can be used with or without the case
  • Two-colour options

Cons

  • Ride-on capabilities have a relatively short span (18 months -3 years).

Best personalised kids luggage

Expert rating:

Kids Wheelie SuitcaseCredit: Not Another Bill

For a touch of charming nostalgia and modern flair, this personalised suitcase is an absolute delight, giving off strong Paddington Bear vibes that we adore. In today's world full of tacky kid designs, this suitcase stands out with its classic design that can be customised with your child's name (if it's six letters or less) or, alternatively, their initials. One of our favourite features is its versatility: it can be easily pulled by school-aged kids or carried on its side, just like in Paddington's famous case. Stylish and practical, this sleek suitcase is our top pick for trendy kids.

Pros

  • Stunning traditional design
  • Personalisable
  • Three colour choices
  • Zipped compartments

Cons

  • No ride-on capabilities

Trunki is the OG ride-on suitcase and is still one of the most popular choices for families. Trunki introduced the ride-along suitcase concept and became a household name after appearing on BBC's Dragons' Den back in 2006. Surprisingly, the dragons didn’t see the potential, but they couldn't have been more wrong. Parents adore Trunkis for their practical use and playful designs, which kids love. The joy of being pulled around makes children happy, and as we know, a happy child means a happy parent (most of the time). This airline-friendly travel case is perfect for family holidays when kids are often bored in the airport.

Pros

  • Award-winning design
  • Easy to use
  • Added accessories

Cons

  • Older versions of the Trunki weren't as a durable but this seems to be improved with the newer versions

Speaking of adorable cases with fun accessories, let's talk about Boppi. This charming design is perfect for toddlers and young children. We absolutely love this soft-shell pull-along suitcase that can be personalised with stickers. When we tested it, we found that a two-year-old can pull it when it’s half full, and a four-year-old can handle it when it’s completely full. This is fantastic, especially when you’re juggling larger suitcases and trying to find the check-in desk. We love this case for first-time travellers as it is extremely easy for children to use independently. While this case isn’t as large as some of the others on our list, it’s perfect for carrying all your little one’s treasures (think: snacks and toys) onto the aircraft. Plus, we adore the idea of getting a matching coin purse and rucksack to complete the look.

Pros

  • Lightweight, making it ideal for younger children
  • Multiple design options
  • Matching accessories

Cons

  • Not large enough to serve as the main suitcase for a week-long holiday.

When it comes to tweens, less is definitely more. Gone are the days when you could dress them up or personalise their belongings—they're way too cool for that now. But don’t worry, this understated gem from Smiggle is both stylish and practical. With handy pockets and an adjustable strap, it's perfect for your tween who wants to look cool while staying organised. When we tested it, we found that there was enough space for us to pack close to two weeks' worth of clothing.

Disney Princess Trolley Backpack With Light Up WheelsCredit: Smiggle

We all have that luggage tucked away that only sees the light of day once or twice a year. With kids, their tastes change so quickly that it can feel wasteful. That's why we love the backpack trolley from Smiggle. It doubles as a daily backpack, making it perfect for your child to use daily. Plus, it's ideal for overnight stays at friends' or family's houses. Our favourite feature? The light-up wheels and princess print, of course.

Pros

  • Multi-purpose design
  • Light up wheels
  • Matching accessories available

Cons

  • May not be to all children's tastes

What size should kids' luggage be?

Your little one won't be able to navigate an adult-sized travel case, so packing their own smaller kids' luggage is essential for travelling. It encourages independence and responsibility and is a great way to get them excited about their new adventure. The best luggage for kids to manage themselves is usually smaller than a standard carry-on size (22 inches). Younger children will struggle with a larger case, leading to meltdowns (and not just from the kids). However, at around ten years old, they may be ready to handle a carry-on case (but make sure you do a trial run prior to the day of departure).

What should I pack in my kids' luggage?

Packing for a flight with kids can be a breeze with a bit of preparation. We have compiled a handy checklist to make sure you’ve got all the essentials covered:

Snacks: When they get bored, children become snack gremlins, which can be inconvenient and costly. Stay ahead by packing a variety of their favourite healthy snacks. Think fruit slices, crackers, cheese sticks, crisps, and treats. Our top tip is to avoid too much sugar—for obvious reasons.

Entertainment: Keep your kids occupied by any means necessary. Now is not the time to monitor screen time religiously, but try to break up time on smart devices with books, colouring supplies, and small toys. Another top tip is to pre-download their favourite movie, which will hopefully keep them hooked for the duration.

Headphones: Kid-friendly headphones are perfect for watching movies or listening to music without disturbing fellow passengers.

Comfort Items: Bring along their favourite blanket and pillow from home. Although the airlines may have this, there is nothing like home comforts when you are in a different environment. And, of course, don't forget their favourite teddy. You could even make them a little passport to travel with.

Change of Clothes: Accidents happen! A full change of clothes, including socks and underwear, is a must.

Toiletries: Pack a small toiletries bag with a couple of nappies (if needed), wet wipes, hand sanitiser, tissues, and any necessary medications.

Personal Essentials: Don’t forget a reusable water bottle, a small first-aid kit (great if you are going on a staycation), and any special items your child might need.

Toys: Airport toy prices can be eye-wateringly expensive, so we recommend buying kids' toys ahead of time. Keep them as a fun surprise to reveal at the airport, providing a delightful distraction from the pricey airport shop toys.

These items will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable flight for you and your little ones. Safe travels!
