Intensive Care Staff On Covid-19

"We are working in battle zone conditions."

Back in March, we dedicated the cover of Grazia to the NHS workers on the frontline of the coronavirus crisis: the doctors, nurses and paramedics risking their lives to save others.

Since then, of course, thousands have died of Covid-19, many in tragic circumstances, unable to say final goodbyes to loved ones. Meanwhile, over 200 healthcare workers in the UK have now died during this pandemic, and their colleagues are dealing with their own grief, as well as the emotional trauma of witnessing harrowing stories playing out every day.

The Intensive Care Society provides emotional support to ICU professionals through personal counselling, group sessions and online resources. This video has been released as part of their #intensivelycaring campaign to mark the 50th anniversary of the organisation.

‘Every ICU worker is facing traumas of their own as well as coping with the extremes of a new unknown virus, unprecedented numbers of patients, personal danger of infection, colleagues falling ill and the loss of scores of people in our care,’ says Dr Ganesh Suntharalingam, president of the Intensive Care Society. ‘We are used to handling pressure. But now we are working in battle zone conditions. We are coming into work each day knowing our own personal experience will be as devastating as it was yesterday and the day before. The post-trauma aftermath will be equally difficult to bear.’

In our lifetimes, 1 in 6 of us will require admission to intensive care. So, if you can, please click here to donate and help support the frontline heroes continuing to put themselves at risk for the rest of us.
