In a recent interview with Vogue, Olivia Wilde - best known for her roles in films Tron: Legacy, Cowboys & Aliens, Booksmart and The Lazarus Effect - has spoken out about her relationshipwith 27-year-old singer Harry Styles. Amid cheating rumours, scrutiny over their age gap, and speculation over them breaking up, the 37-year-old has confirmed the pair are still together, and happier than ever.
While Olivia Wilde is used to some attention from her work in various films and television shows, she’s felt the pressure of being under a particularly zoomed-in public microscope since her relationship with Harry Styles began.
Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles took fans of the singer by surprise when their relationship was announced this year. The pair’s romance began when they met on the set of Olivia Wilde’s film, Don't Worry Darling, for which filming has now wrapped and will be available to watch in September next year. The film, which is Wilde’s directorial debut, is about an unhappy housewife in the 1950s who discovers a disturbing truth, while her loving husband hides a dark secret. The couple is played by Styles and Little Women’s Florence Pugh, while Wilde takes a supporting role.
Don't Worry Darling made headlines during filming when Wilde and Styles were spotted holding hands while off the set in January 2021. A source exclusively told Us Weekly at the time that the couple developed a connection after working together on the movie.
‘Harry and Olivia had chemistry almost instantaneously on set. It was only a matter of time before they got together,’ the source said at the time.’
But now, the two are publicly besotted, and currently in a semi long-distance relationship as Harry continues with Love on Tour. Since their relationship began, Wilde specifically has been subject to a lot of unfair criticism, especially about their ten-year age gap.
Speaking on this envy-fueled gossip, she said ‘It’s obviously really tempting to correct a false narrative,’ Wilde tells Vogue, ‘But I think what you realise is that when you’re really happy, it doesn’t matter what strangers think about you. All that matters to you is what’s real, and what you love, and who you love.’
Wilde also addresses the attention that’s frequently focused on her as a celebrity, comparing it to the attention we all feel like people who are very connected to social media ‘In the past 10 years, as a society, we have placed so much more value on the opinion of strangers rather than the people closest to us,’ she says. ‘But I’m happier than I’ve ever been. And I’m healthier than I’ve ever been, and it’s just wonderful to feel that.’
Talking about the cruel criticism she received for going on holiday with Styles without her children, Wilde said ‘Parenting forces you, to be honest about how you live your life. It puts in sharp, clear focus decisions you’re making. I think we owe it to children to be happy. They sense it. They’re so intuitive. The idea that you can trick your kids into thinking you’re happy is ludicrous.’
Continuing, she tells Vogue ‘You can go deep on Cold War influences on family structure, why we all think we need, you know, a two-parent household and a microwave. It’s very easy to control women by using guilt and shame, and I have no time for misplaced guilt and shame. The work I’ve done personally in the last decade has been learning to have a voice, and taking my voice seriously.’
Though they’re clearly loved up, Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles are yet to technically confirm their romance. Still, it’s clear the two are more than just enjoying each other’s company and they’re not letting the rumours and ruthless gossip impact their happiness. Good for them.
