On Tuesday, Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik announced they were expecting their first child together and despite appetites for celebrity news understandably on the floor right now, this seems to take social media by storm. As celebrity friends and followers alike reacted to the news, a theme began to emerge.
Commentators seemed sceptical of the typically celebratory announcement given their rocky relationship history. But the most concerning reaction? Those questioning the paternity of the unborn child and even congratulating Gigi’s ex, Tyler Cameron, on ‘becoming a father’.
For those who don’t know, Gigi dated Tyler in the summer of 2019 after splitting with Zayn in January of that year. The relationship ended in October and rumours of a reconciliation between Gigi and Zayn started up in December. Being on and off again since 2015, the couple have taken to keeping their relationship status more private in recent years – meaning their pregnancy announcement came as a shock to some who didn’t even realise they were back together until Zayn appeared on Gigi’s feed last week as she celebrated her 25th birthday in quarantine (you may’ve missed the Valentine’s Day tribute Gigi posted on her second Instagram account in February).
With all of this confusion in mind, some have taken to working out the paternity themselves, with TMZ reporting that Gigi is five months pregnant and thus would’ve conceived around the time reconciliation rumours began in December last year. But it’s not enough to convince the trolls, who went on Tyler Cameron’s Instagram Live yesterday to insinuate he was the father.
Reading the comments section – which included things like ‘Congrats on becoming the father. Gigi is preg,’- Tyler responded ‘Y'all are wrong in the comments. Y'all are terrible.’ Us Weekly later reported that a source close to Tyler wanted to clear up what he meant on the IG Live. ‘He didn’t mean “wrong” literally,’ the source told the publication. ‘He meant, “Y’all are messed up for even saying that”. It’s slang. Obviously he isn’t the father.’
Perhaps this type of response is exactly why Gigi is yet to comment on the pregnancy herself – with the announcement coming from her mother who was responding to press speculation. Because, not only are comments sections filled with speculation on paternity and her and Zayn’s relationship – they’re also flooded with demands for her to comment.
Either way, the reaction is not okay.
