jacqueums big bags

There are a handful of things Simon Porte Jacquemus’ label is known for: belly grazing scoop necks, tiny little lipstick-sized bags and ginormo straw hats. At his eponymous brand’s spring summer 2019 Paris Fashion Week show yesterday, he added one more thing to that list: gargantuan beach bags. With fringing and shoulder straps, these fringed bags were so big they fell from waist to ankle, throwing shadow over the models in their labia-skimming swimsuits and micro dresses.

Jacquemus’ isn’t the only to go full Alice in Wonderland on accessories. Over New York and Milan Fashion Week Victoria Beckham, Proenza Schouler and Jil Sander also presented supersized totes for spring. Lolling open or hugged under the crook of an arm, they all had one thing in common: XXXL proportions. This might be the most practical trend to trip down the catwalks since the return of the bum bag. Can I get a 'hallelujah'? Finally, we can leave the satellite bag at home as these capacious pouches are plenty big enough to stow away everything from your keys and gym kit to your kitchen sink.

The floral trend exploded on the Versace runway - probably the last place you'd expect to find delicate blooms. But Donatella's slinky layers of colour-clashing, pattern-mashing prints could not have looked more empowering - especially on original 1990s Super, Shalom Harlow.

Armani

All the Armani-isms: Fifty shades of grey, blue and a pop of pink with liquid shine fabrics that gave a fluid underwater feel to even the most classic of suits.

Of course, when one item hits saturation point, like the micro bag, the fashion community naturally reestablish the most be neglected trend in its place. It happened with Birkenstocks and the revival of flip-flops and now the cigarette-sized bag is being usurped by the maligned colossal tote. One editor has been joking that the last time we lived through a big bag trend explosion women everywhere suffered wrist strain from the weight of their handbags. That aside, with this many people in the fashion scene giving these mammoth bags their seal of approval now is the time to invest to get the most wear out of this incoming trend. Just make sure you have adequate wrist support first.
