On the catwalk at Michael Kors, Irina Shayk wore a metallic trench as a minidress. But off, she opted for something a little more low-key (and, we imagine, a lot warmer): a supersized puffer coat. Hers wasn't quilted as such, although more on that later, it just had a slightly inflated look that has become popular of late (you can currently buy styles from Ganni, River Island and Totême).
Isabelli Fontana, who also walked at Michael Kors, wore a giant puffer coat over her black jeans and stomper boots, smiling despite the zero temperatures in New York. Rianne Van Rompaey, meanwhile, chose a pink-and-black style from The North Face.
This all confirms a long-held suspicion that, when push comes to shove, a puffer jacket is the only coat you need for winter - especially as there's something for everyone. At Copenhagen Fashion Week, for example, Mona M. Ali wore the sunniest quilted coat from Baum und Pferdgarten (sadly now sold out) to brighten up the distinctly ominous skies. But it also works for minimalists, like Shayk, who opted for a style that's perhaps more practical and blends into the background.
When it comes to styling, anything goes. You could go off-duty like Shayk (with cargo pants and khaki slip-ons from Ugg) or dressy (Ali wore her puffer with a sweater dress, a pearl necklace and a cowboy hat).
