How To Style Leggings Like The Fashion Pros

Because we don't plan on wearing anything else until New Year's Eve.

Christmas Day's been and gone but it's not New Year's Eve, leaving you and your wardrobe in something of a No Man's Land. And while your festive finery might get a second wind in a few short days, now's not the time for bodycon. Or sequins. Instead, why not turn to one thing in your wardrobe that's always a safe haven when your plans involve shuffling between the sofa and the fridge: leggings.

Whatever kind of pair you gravitate towards - super-soft, sweat-wicking, sculpted - leggings are brilliant for lounging, dashing to the supermarket and walking the dog, plus they can look surprisingly chic if you style them a certain way. Just look at Tamu McPherson, who wore her black leggings at Paris Fashion Week (yes, really), paired with a fabulous leather smock. Swap the leather smock for a leather coat - Aligne has a brilliant belted version in forest green - and the heeled boots for stomper boots and you've got a high-impact, low-effort outfit that will, most importantly, be comfortable.

Hailey Bieber is obviously the queen of making leggings look intentional - and her best trick is to wear them with a tonal outfit, say, head-to-toe grey. By matching your coat to your leggings, the entire effect is much less of a mish-mash. Trade the trainers for loafers, clogs or ballet pumps and you'll shift the dial from post-gym to polished in no time. Lori Harvey, meanwhile, has another good tip for making your off-duty leggings look a little less like you're running late for a yoga class.

They key is in the accessories. For a recent excursion, Harvey wore her leggings with socks and sliders, yes, but also a leather shoulder bag and black shades. Understated with a side of glamour. So, there you have it. And remember: after you've dialled up the drama for the 31st, you can luxuriate in leggings for the rest of January. That's definitely something to look forward to.
