We don't know about you, but when something is referred to as being '15 years ago', we automatically think it must mean the '90s. But no no, it's actually 2008 – which weirdly doesn't feel that long ago, right? As it turns out, there's no need to cast our minds back to this era when it comes to fashion, as the resurgence of all things '00s has made us relive some of our most memorable looks - especially when it comes to dresses.
Some of our favourite dresses of years gone by (like the bodycon dress, loved by Victoria Beckham in 2008) are back, and now our attention has turned to yet another throwback dress style popular that year: the halter neck.
Unless you were still a small child at this time, the chances are you will have owned a halter-neck dress (or top to wear with your boot-cut jeans). And this means you'll also know the ongoing conundrum of bra or no bra? Or most likely have tried the 'invisible' strap styles that, FYI, were by no means invisible on anyone.
Paris Hilton has took a shining (quite literally) to the halter neck throughout the years, first up was that now iconic chainmail style for her 21st birthday in 2002, and later this cowl-neck micro mini style she wore to an event back in 2008. We've already told you how the court heels Paris is wearing are back, but super short mini skirts and even the cowl detail – none of us thought would make a return – has been seen this year.
Rewind even further to 2007 and Beyoncé also backed the halter with a red satin draped-hem style. How did she style it? With supersize hoop earrings and peep-toe platforms, naturally. While this hemline is thankfully not making a return, we have found satin halter dresses you can shop from the likes of Miss Selfridge (there's another throwback for you) and Rixo.
Baby Rihanna also wore a halter-neck dress to an event back in 2006, and does anyone else remember this star print? It's giving us serious flashbacks. We don't, however, quite know where those lime, embellished pump heels came from – and we assume they won't be coming back anytime soon.
Fast forward to now, and Hailey Bieber is continuing her love for all things Y2K with (you guessed it) a halter-neck dress. As soon as Mrs Bieber wears it, we know it's set to be big news.
Keeping it fuss-free with simple gold earrings and dewy make-up, the model made us want to give the halter neck another chance. Because the truth is, we really loved it 15 years ago. While it may have been kept to night out territory back then, now, Kitri has created a style you'll want to wear to a wedding, Faithfull The Brand has holiday-ready styles and the good old high street has stuck to its roots with River Island and Miss Selfridge having after-dark mini versions (although you could definitely wear them for summer with trainers and a trench).
Keep going to shop the best halter-neck dresses 2023 has to offer.
