It's January, which means we'll be freezing during the school run, debating buying yet another puffer coat, and regretting our 'new year, new me' decision which involved signing up for another couch to 5k after four glasses of wine. Sigh.

If you're sticking at it (and good for you) or you're already a seasoned runner, you'll definitely need some thermal base layers to go with your workout leggings. In fact, why not just treat yourself to a whole new wardrobe of winter running gear as a reward for all your efforts so far?

While some avid Park Run fans might be wearing shorts (yes, even in the snow), others will opt for their very best fleece or a cosy hoodie. But what’s the right balance to strike? Too few clothes and you’ll just want to run straight back into bed. Too many and you’ll be tying things around your waist after your 10-minute warm-up. We've pulled together some of the best winter running gear essentials you'll need to make your run mildly enjoyable. No promises, though.

Stretchy and with reflective details for visibility on dark nights, these gloves will keep your hands warm whether you're going for a gentle jog or engaging in marathon training. They also have a touchscreen-compatible index finger and thumb, so you can still use your phone to put on music or podcasts.

Thanks to their smoothing high-rise waist, these leggings are extra comfy and won't fall down. Pair with your favourite running fleece and keep out the cold.

The reflective stripes on this jacket ensure you'll be seen in the dark, while the hood and thumbholes offer extra protection from the cold. Plus, there's a back zipped pocket where you can stash your keys.

This is designed for colder weather and is therefore intended to be lightweight but with heat-regulating technology. It's also water repellent, making it an all-weather winner.

These colourblock leggings are designed to regulate your temperature so that you stay comfortable when you workout, even when it's freezing. They're on sale right now, too, although they're selling quickly.

When it's really cold and you need some extra help staying warm, Free People's fleece will be your saving grace. You can always tie it round your waist if you get too hot, but this might be the very thing that gets you out of the house when it's snowing.

Keep your feet warm in Uniqlo's thermal socks. Plus, they'll look good layered over your favourite running leggings.

Also available in a bright strawberry hue should you want more colour in your workout, this top has an easy, regular fit and is made from a moisture-wicking material to keep you feeling your best.

These leggings have reflective logos for better visibility outside, while there's also an internal drawcord on the waist for an adjustable fit. There's even a zipped back pocket for your essentials.
