Katie Holmes has just cemented a trend that comes every autumn like clockwork. The camel coat. The actor has supreme taste in outerwear, and this double-breasted number, from Budapest-based brand Nanushka, is no exception. Accessorising with lace-up boots, a fedora hat and a face mask, this has to be the ultimate outfit formula for cold-weather strolls.

At last month's secret show for Bottega Veneta, the celebrity front row also backed the camel coat.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley arrived wearing a double-breasted version that swept past her knees, which she paired with a black turtleneck and black flared trousers. All three pieces, plus her clutch bag, sandals, chain-link necklaces and earrings, were new-season Bottega Veneta. Salma Hayek, meanwhile, also chose a brown coat, this time a leather trench the colour of hot chocolate, to watch the show. While it wasn’t a camel coat in the traditional sense, it still covered off the article’s best quality (a stealth wealth vibe).

The camel coat also made its presence felt at Paris Fashion Week. Monica de La Villardière wore a belted poncho the colour of caramel for Louis Vuitton. Sharon Alexie shrobed a camel sheepskin coat for Chloé. Both prove that you don’t necessarily need to go traditional when shopping for a camel coat (although the collared, belted and slightly oversized style, made famous by Max Mara, will always have enduring appeal).

Mango’s double-breasted version has the structured look of Bottega Veneta’s (at a fraction of the cost). & Other Stories’s wool-blend trench is the perfect winter alternative to your favourite transeasonal cover-up.

Of course, what you wear underneath is entirely up to you. That’s the best part about a camel coat - it’s so beautiful that no-one will notice what you've thrown it over.
