If summer could be summed up in a dress (bear with me) it would undoubtedly be the Hockney, a now-famous dress by House of Sunny. Worn by Kendall Jenner, whose post of the strappy, clingy and lily pad green number clocked up 4.1 million likes on Instagram, as well as a slew of influencers keen to clutter their feeds with its photogenic cut-outs, its sweet-spot price (£98) and feel-good vibes meant it had seven sell-out drops over the summer. Now, it’s back, but this time in a shade that feels entirely autumn-appropriate, a cheerful orange that looks very similar to the colour that leaves will soon be turning.
It is, however, still a pretty summery dress even though it's knitted so styling is key. How about throwing a cropped cardigan over the top (very Jacquemus)? House of Sunny’s Peggy, a ribbed knit with a detachable faux-fur collar, would look pretty extra, but this flecked knit jacket from Zara, a veritable emporium of cropped cardigans at this precise moment, would also do the trick.
Layer a denim jacket over the top - Bianca Saunders’s bleached version is the dream - or a trench coat when the temperature really starts to turn next month.
Finally, you don’t want to ruin the look with opaque tights - really, don’t even think about it - so why not try some knee-high boots for extra coverage? Aeyde’s two-tone style would chime nicely with the dress’s autumn aesthetic, but & Other Stories top-stitched motorcycle boots would toughen things up a bit.
You might be a social media cliché, but with a dress this good, who really cares?
