I couldn’t give you an exact percentage - although a super-fan somewhere has probably crunched the numbers, trust me - but this is an incontrovertible fact: Kate Middleton wears a lot of blue.
Just last night at Buckingham Palace, she wore a periwinkle blue knee-length dress - from Emilia Wickstead - to welcome the president and first lady of Ukraine. The day before that, it was a baby blue jumper from Massimo Dutti, which she paired with elegant black trousers from Joseph. Last week also had two blue moments: a sky blue shirt (again, Massimo Dutti) and a denim shirt dress from Gabriela Hearst. She wore the latter when she and her family met David Attenborough - and they were all, Duke and David included, wearing some variation on blue.
Colour theorists might try to tell you the choice is something to do with channeling a sense of calm - especially during these fraught times such as these - but we think it’s more likely to be the power of blue. It’s a colour that many - politicians, celebrities and royalty - frequently turn to for public appearances.
Jill Biden wore a marine-coloured dress for the first presidential debate (also by Gabriela Hearst), while who could forget the first lady's arrival at the White House? On Inauguration Day, Melania Trump wore a powder blue ensemble from Ralph Lauren, and everything from her dress to her gloves to her shoes was coloured in the soft pastel shade. Kim Kardashian is also a fan, posting a photo of herself against a blue sky wearing a glove-tight top and skirt from Tyrell. The picture has clocked almost 3 million likes in two days. Clearly she’s onto something.
Middleton often chooses blue for state visits. For last year’s tour of Pakistan, she wore two blue outfits, one Catherine Walker, one Maheen Khan. The light seemed to capture them brilliantly - something her sister-in-law also appreciates. For her return to the spotlight earlier this year, Meghan Markle chose a turquoise sheath dress from Victoria Beckham. The combination of the rain and the flashbulbs created a true bolt-from-the-blue moment that was beamed across the world. Calming? Perhaps. Powerful? Absolutely.
