Consider Halloween 2024 already sorted. This year, you'll be dressing as Jenna Ortega, dressing as Winona Ryder. Confused? Allow us to direct you to the promo trail of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the second instalment of the 1988 film starring Michael Keaton, Catherine O'Hara and Winona Ryder, all of whom are reprising their roles in the cult series directed by the master of ceremonies when it comes to all things weird and wonderful: Tim Burton.

Jenna Ortega plays Astrid, Ryder's daughter, and out and about this week to promote the sequel, she decided to pay homage to a look from the original, worn by - who else? - Ryder's character, Lydia Deetz. Ortega's every look so far - a pin-striped sweetheart blazer by Dolce & Gabbana; a tulle gown with patent leather curlicues by Vivienne Westwood - has been classic goth girl, which is no problem at all for Ortega, who lest we forget has also played Wednesday Addams.

But this particular outfit was special. Snapped exciting her car in New York City, Ortega emerged wearing a checked skirt, a black cardigan and a prim white button-down by Thom Browne, the goth-girl version of the 'very demure, very mindful' trend sweeping TikTok, but also a throwback to a famous costume of Lydia Deetz's. As Ortega's stylist, Enrique Melendez, posted on Instagram Stories: #Winona and #LydiaDeetz together and separately will always be icons and forever the vibe.' The finishing touch wasn't so demure, however, with a book-shaped handbag custom-made by Ozias. Its inspiration is a very specific tome: Handbook for the Recently Deceased, which is something of a guiding light in the original film. With a clever play on words, however, Ortega's version is embroidered so that its cover reads Handbag for the Recently Deceased. Whether you're a fan of the film or not, you can't deny clever marketing (and this kind of spookily good method dressing) is almost guaranteed to drive people into cinemas.
