You wait ages for summer to come along only to moan about it when it finally arrives. ‘It’s too hot!’ you huff. But, calm down, Goldilocks and let’s look at the facts. First off, this is the UK so it’s highly unlikely it’s ‘too hot’. What’s more probable is that you’re not dressed appropriately. That’s understandable. It started slow this year, and with foreign holidays still largely off the table, we simply haven’t hit our summer stride yet. Hibernation is not the solution (we’ve had over a year of that already), a clever warm-weather wardrobe is. Here are five pieces to help you keep your cool now.
The statement slip
See, the fashion gods are smiling – bestowing on us outfit inspiration from perennial cool girls Alexa Chung and Zoë Kravitz. Both of them have opted for the minimal, ‘90s-inspired midi slip. Easy to wear, they’re teaming theirs with a white vest top for a grungier take on summer dressing. Couldn't be simpler, or more stylish.

The breezy blouse
For the launch of her sister Savannah’s new Next collection, Sienna Miller continued her strong summer streakin an embroidered, short sleeved blouse. Laidback but polished, consider it an essential investment if you’re returning to the office anytime soon. For those of a more party-ready persuasion, colourful, tropically-printed versions are also doing the rounds, like the Celine by Hedi Slimane Hawaiian shirt Rihanna wore with denim cut offs back in March.

The summer knit
Please note, this is very much not your winter knit. It’s not heavy, it’s not chunky, it’s definitely not a polo neck. Take your cue from Gigi Hadid and Katie Holmes who are tapping into summer’s crafty mood with crochet styles from Mango (still available too! Hurrah!) or Little Simz (in JW Anderson, the designer has form when it comes to dopamine-inducing knitwear) and Hailey Bieber who have both turned to colourful patchwork styles.

The bikini top
As foreign holidays are still TBC (or even totally MIA) for many us, swimwear has fallen down the agenda this year. But, you’re missing a trick – give it a whirl by wearing a bikini top under a shirt like Dua, or do like Kate Moss does and team a one-piece under a denim mini. Extra points if you opt for sustainable swimwear.

The cowboy boots
Word for your summer 2021 style dictionary: ranchcore. That is? Cowgirl inspired looks spanning everything from fringing to gingham. Also growing in popularity are cowgirl boots. Boots for summer might sound counterintuitive, but just think of the benefits: no grubby feet at the end of day pacing around the city, no need for a pedicure (or even a leg wax). They render the prospect of wearing a mini less terrifying. Take your cue from Kendall - here, also making the case for summer black - and wear with a whisper of a slip. Yee-ha!
