Is there no end to the ingenuity and dedication of Harry Styles stans? Last week they began flexing their crafty credentials by taking to TikTok to make their own versions of the JW Anderson crochet cardigan Styles wore during a rehearsal for an appearance on The Today Show in February.
Not one for an anonymous grey hoodie, the multi-coloured, vintage-style piece chimes with Styles’ signature style: flamboyant and eclectic with a dash of the English eccentricity and West Coast ’70s cool thrown in for good measure (craft and crochet are clearly very much a thing for Harry right now. He wore an orange and green crochet vest for his recent Watermelon Sugar video and is a big fan of Bode, the American label renowned for its hand-worked patchwork and applique pieces).
The original version sold for £1,250. But while a lesser designer might be irritated by seeing the copycat DIY versions sweeping social media, Jonathan Anderson is celebrating it. So much so, in fact, that he has now released the pattern on jwanderson.com. “I am so impressed and incredibly humbled by this trend and everyone knitting the cardigan. I really wanted to show our appreciation so we are sharing the pattern with everyone. Keep it up!,” a statement from the designer says.
This ingenious DIY has been sweeping Tiktok, with a crafty new trend that emerged on the app in recent weeks, with fans attempting to recreate the oversized patchwork piece. The users have been detailing the process of creating the cardigan, with some even sharing their sketches of the piece or enlisting their mother's (guilty).
If baking, gardening and Joe Wicks workouts have so far passed you by, consider this proof that it’s not too late to take up a lockdown hobby. Here’s hoping next we get a pattern to knit our very own Harry...
