MAFS UK: Stop Telling Women Not To Swear

After Franky tells his wife that a woman swearing is 'the ugliest thing', one writer asks why men are still insistent on controlling how women speak.

Jordon Alexis

There's lots to be annoyed about watchingMarried At First Sight UK). And I'm sad that we haven't seen our favourite couple,Matt and Daniel{ =nofollow}, for days because they got stuck on their honeymoon. But one of the things which made me shout at the TV last night was hearing yet another man say it's unattractive for women to swear.

When speaking about Nikita's now infamous outburst at Jordon, which happened because he has been treating his wife Alexis horrendously, Franky spoke to his wife, Marilyse, and told her just how unbecoming it was for Nikita to swear. As Marilyse said that Nikita was out of order, Franky added his two pence, saying: 'And a woman swearing like that, it's the ugliest thing.'

It's not just Nikita's language which has been criticised this series - Jordon has repeatedly said how vile he finds his wife Alexis swearing (when, being honest, a lot of the time he deserves somebody telling him to piss off).

As a woman who swears a lot, few things wind me up more than hearing a man speak about how vulgar it is when a woman speaks the way she likes. In fact, Jordon has been the ultimate hypocrite - while expounding on how much he hates Alexis swearing, he has sworn at her. So he obviously isn't that offended by the language himself - he just dislikes a woman using it.

It seems like a pretty minor thing - in terms of feminism - to be hung up on, but men still seem to have a monopoly over language; how you can speak, what tone you use, and what words you're allowed to say. A man telling a woman not to swear is just another way to exert control, in a way that's more socially acceptable than telling a woman you expect her to do all the housework.

The most annoying thing of all is you don't often hear men being told the same thing. Can you remember the last time you heard a man telling another man not to swear? I know I can't. It's ridiculous that it's never seen as shocking when a man swears - it's why male comedians and men like Gordon Ramsay have been able to make a career out of spewing profanities. Because men are supposed to be dominant and use the forbidden words, right?

Even growing up, I remember being shouted at by teachers to stop swearing, when the boys sat next to me - who swore even more - wouldn't be reprimanded. I also remember being told that the way I spoke wasn't 'ladylike', as way to encourage me to stop developing the mouth of a sailor. (It obviously didn't fucking work.) But now I'm older, I can see that - unfortunately - it's still an outdated attitude men, and some women, harbour. That to be a real, classy, dainty woman, you're not allowed to convey your emotions through swearing.

But swearing is wonderful. It isn't just a case of using bad words. You can use it to exclaim shock, for humour, to exaggerate. And, sometimes, to offend (only in cases somebody really deserves it). Telling women not to swear is limiting our vocabulary, and the way we're able to express ourselves. And you might have heard before the lazy explanation that people who swear aren't clever, but actually, there's been quite a few studies now that show people who swear are actually more intelligent, and linguistically fluent.

So to all those men who tell women off for swearing? A very kind f*ck off.

Lauren Huntriss and Matthew Bennett

One of the biggest storylines this season was about Matthew and his virginity, as he was repeatedly labelled as 'virgin'/'ex-virgin' Matt by the narrator. Anyway, Matthew was matched with Lauren - who, yes, he lost his virginity to - but it all went horribly wrong when Lauren heard Matthew telling the other guys at dinner that he wasn't sexually attracted to Lauren. AWKWARD. Lauren is still a make-up artist, we don't know if she's dating anyone. But on the other hand, self-confessed fitness enthusiast Matthew is loved up with a new girlfriend - who he met at a wrestling tryout.
