Another week, another Hailey and Justin Bieber story to send the internet into meltdown. Of all the April Fools last week, it was undoubtedly the newlyweds’ fake baby announcement that grabbed most headlines and dominated social media. It sparked criticism that it was insensitive to those struggling to conceive; and then a barrage of support for the couple, with fans leaping to their defence. Whatever your personal reaction to the newlyweds’ ‘sonogram’ and pictures of Hailey in hospital, the furore proved these two are Hollywood’s most talked about couple.
To say it’s been an eventful seven months of matrimony would be an understatement. While we’re used to seeing the fledgling super-couplemake public displays of affection, argue and even cry – last week, Justin, 25, and Hailey, 22, appeared jovial and flirtatious in front of cameras while out in Orange County, California. Their mood was perhaps buoyed by reports that they have just purchased an $8.5million mansion in Beverly Hills, which will serve as their first marital home since getting married at a Manhattan courthouse last September.
Initially, the wedding surprised the A-list world, coming just 12 weeks after news broke they were dating. But insiders close to the couple reveal that their 10-year friendship is key to understanding how the duo already behave like an old married couple. ‘It was the wedding that no one saw coming except for Justin and Hailey,’ an insider reveals. ‘They have had this deep, platonic friendship developing behind the scenes for years. Justin has achieved staggering success as well as dealt with personal struggles within that time-frame, and Hailey has witnessed so much from the sidelines. They feel as though they spent a lifetime being friends before they wed.’
That may explain why, just five months into being hitched, Hailey told US Vogue (the pair were on the cover last month) that she was finding marriage ‘very hard,’ saying: ‘That is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.’ Meanwhile, Justin opened up for the first time about his struggle with depression, citing it as the reason why he cancelled the remaining 14 shows of his 2017 world tour. Calling himself ‘emotionally unstable’, Justin admitted that he and Hailey are still ‘working through stuff ’ as a couple, hinting that they’re in therapy.
Justin was also said to be affected by ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, 26, checking into rehab in October last year, a er she reportedly suffered an emotional breakdown. Around this time Justin was pictured crying and being comforted by Hailey and, according to our source, Justin’s relationship with his ex is, perhaps surprisingly, one of the main issues Hailey supports him with, indicating a maturity beyond her 22 years.
‘Hailey is actually amazingly OK with Justin’s feelings towards Selena. Because she knew them both as a couple and knows how deeply they were in love with one another, she is very accepting of the fact that Justin still cares for his ex and isn’t as insecure about it as people might expect,’ we’re told. ‘They’ve already had couples therapy sessions and are open about their feelings and Hailey has been nothing but supportive of Justin’s struggles.’ But when they’re not dealing with personal drama, the pair enjoy making the most of their new Hollywood status. Justin – who’s estimated to be worth around $265 million – has quickly got Hailey used to his love of travelling via his private jet, and is said to regularly whisk her off on holidays.
‘As well as spending low-key evenings in together bingeing on Netflix shows like any other couple, Justin loves to surprise Hailey by taking her on lavish shopping trips on his jet,’ the insider explains. ‘They want to travel more this year but Hailey is very committed to her modelling career which has meant they can only take short trips. In their downtime, they love hitting the Hillsong church scene and regularly pray together at services. Religion is very important to both of them.’
What’s next for the couple? Our insider adds that while there will undoubtedly be more issues to work on, Justin and Hailey are also planning a celeb-filled wedding celebration and a family at a later stage. We’re told, ‘Hailey wants to wait on babies for now, to carry on with her career as a model but Justin is desperate to become a father. They both want a proper wedding ceremony too with their family and famous friends around them, but they’re not putting themselves under any pressure. For now, they’re just enjoying the ride.’
