Britney Spears's memoir The Woman in Me flew off the shelves in record numbers last October, making it Simon & Schuster's quickest-selling title. Now, fans of the Princess of Pop can look forward to seeing her extraordinary life chronicled on the big screen, as it has been confirmed that Universal Pictures will be adapting The Woman in Me for a biopic. Unsurprisingly, obtaining the rights to Britney's biopic generated a competitive auction among film production companies, with Sony, Warner Bros, Fox, Disney and Netflix also throwing their hat in the ring.
The Woman in Me is estimated to have sold three million copies globally. It covered all bases, namely her Louisiana upbringing, her stratospheric levels of fame and roller-coaster ride in the spotlight, her 13-year conservatorship, as well as relationships, including her late 90s romance with Justin Timberlake.
Britney teased the news of a biopic before it was formally announced, writing on X, 'Excited to share with my fans that I've been working on a secret project with #MarcPlatt. He’s always made my favorite movies… stay tuned.' Marc has an illustrious filmography spanning more than three decades, boasting titles including Wicked, Legally Blonde and La La Land. Meanwhile, Jon M. Chu is set to direct and has recently worked alongside Marc on the hotly-awaited film adaptation of stage musical Wicked.
The Grammy-award winner, 42, joins an illustrious set of stars who have had their lives dramatised, including Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston and her Hold Me Closer collaborator, Elton John. Now, the question on many people's lips is: Who is going to play Britney Spears in her biopic?
