Ariana Grande may be the Queen of embracing noughties nostalgia - and pretty much everything else - but she just brought back a trend we were quite happy to leave in 2002. Attempting to tattoo the name of her most recent smash-hit, 7 Rings, on her hand, Ariana accidentally ended up with an English translation of ‘small charcoal grill’.
Endlessly mocked for the typo that took us all back to the Britney Spears glory-days where no one bothered to have their ink checked with a native speaker before getting another language tattooed on their body, Ariana responded in her classic, hilarious way tweeting:
‘Indeed, I left out ‘つの指’ which should have gone in between. It hurt like fuck n still looks tight. I wouldn’t have lasted one more symbol lmao, but this spot also peels a ton and won’t last so if I miss it enough I’ll suffer thru the whole thing next time.’ Later adding, ‘Pls leave me and my tambourine grill alone. thank u’
Deleting her original posts of the tattoo on Instagram, she later posted a new picture on her story of the ‘corrected’ tattoo, which was too quickly pointed out to also be mis-spelled. ‘The kanji 指 and 輪 are split into different lines, so it looks strange,’ Brian Ashcraft wrote for Kotaku, ‘In English, it would be writing “seven ri” and then “ngs” in another paragraph’. According to Kotaku, Japanese can be read left to right or in vertical columns, and reading the tattoo from right to left it actually translates as ‘Small charcoal grill, finger heart’
With the post still up on Ariana’s story, it seems she may be unaware her 'correction' can still be translated incorrectly. ‘Slightly better,’ she wrote, ‘thanks to my tutor for helping me fix and to @kanenavasard for being a legend. And to my doctor for the lidocaine shots (no joke) rip tiny charcoal grill. Miss u man. I actually really liked you.’
Well, rest assured Ariana, the small charcoal grill is still very much tattooed on your body forever. Or at least until the hand tattoo fades, as she said, they don’t last super long. Unlike the trend to have languages you don’t understand wrongly translated on your body, that seems like it will never end…
As she's back inspiring a ton of hilarious memes, why not take a look back at the best her single 'thank u, next' led to...
