Confession: I am a cleansing oil convert. Yes, the cleansing category I once shunned, for reasons including acne, a combination skin type and compromised skin barrier, is now one of my precious skincare pillars. Admittedly, it took some trialling to get to this place. While there are ample options out there, finding the right one will depend on your skin type, the formula on offer, the user experience (we all like a milky emulsification here), and performance – if it leaves behind traces of mascara or a greasy film on the skin, we are very cautious. That said, if you're looking to step up your routine with a cleansing oil, we've done the leg work and riffled through all that's out there to bring you an edit of the most hardworking options out there.

While some may automatically recoil at the thought of cleansing with an oil (the old me is guilty as charged), the magic of cleansing oils is their ability to work across the board on all skin types while doing an effective job of cleansing and cleaning. While testing an array of cleansing oils, our team found that the right ones will cater to all skin types, yes, even acne-prone, and are powerful enough to break down make-up, dirt and debris, all while respecting the skin's natural oils and the overall balance of even the most sensitive skin types.

'Cleansing oils work to attract oils present on the surface of the skin such as make-up, dirt, pollution and UV filters and will help dissolve them away faster than other types of cleansers,' says Gemma Collins, Bioderma’s Dermatologist. 'The physical action of rubbing a cleansing oil into the skin is also much more gentle as it's less abrasive and doesn’t cause as much friction, making it an ideal choice for those with sensitive and dry skin types. However, not all cleansing oils are created equal and it is important that the cleansing oil you choose contains mostly plant-based oils as opposed to heavy essential oils as this can potentially irritate some skin types.'

It all comes down to types of oils encapsulated in the formulas. Oilier skin types prone to acne should opt for lightweight ingredients like grapeseed oils, while dry skin types in need of quenching will love heavier ingredients like olive oil. They don't leave behind a greasy residue as the surfactants included allow the oils and the substances they dissolve on the skin to be rinsed away easily when combined with water. They also make for an ultra-luxurious step in any routine thanks to their often rich, comforting texture.

How we tested the best cleansing oils in 2025

Oil cleanser
Beauty writer Sameeha Shaikh testing cleansing oils

I have tested these cleansing oils over the last six months, alternating and rotating between each to gain a real sense of their performance. I looked out for a few key pain points throughout my testing phase: the formulas ability to thoroughly cleanse make-up and build up from the day; the user experience while applying the product; and its results on my skin. I ranked each cleansing oil against how they performed in these respects.

Formula: As with all of the testing, considering the formula is a great place to start. I noted what ingredients were and whether it was suitable for my skin type, as well as how well it removed make-up, SPF, and daily dirt.

User experience: While testing the products, I thought about the texture - was it feel greasy or nourishing, was it comfortable on the skin or did it feel tacky or sticky? I also pondered on emulsification and rinse-off experience.

Results: The obvious one. But when thinking about the results, I considered whether these cleansing oils really leave the skin feeling clean and how they faired on maintaining hydration and comfort levels. A final thought was given to how my skin looked in the long run after using the oil multiple times.

Keen to give this once niche Korean skincare step a try? Here are the very best tried and tested cleansing oils to try now.

Sameeha Shaikh, beauty writer, says: 'The formula fuses the very best organic and botanical ingredients, like brightening liquorice root, pigmentation-busting plankton extract, and soothing ylang ylang oil, to help improve the overall quality of your complexion while nourishing and softening the skin. The texture of this cleansing oil is both creamy and light, meaning it doesn't leave my skin feeling dry nor weighed down in any way - ideal if you have combination skin like me. My only qualm is the smell - I'm not a huge fan of ylang ylang. Sameeha Shaikh, beauty writer, says: 'Soothing centella asiatica, also known as tiger grass – an essential plant in traditional Korean medicine – is the super-ingredient in this botanical oil-rich formula that transforms into a milky texture when it comes into contact with water. Despite its cleansing power, this oil is surprisingly light and gentle on my skin. It doesn’t leave behind any greasy residue, which is a major plus for me, and does a great job of keeping my skin feeling soothed and comfortable. My only gripe is that the brand recommends double cleansing with its Centella Cleansing Gel, which doesn't bode well for those who don't enjoy double cleansing or buying and using multiple cleansers at once.'

Cleansing Oil FAQs

Are cleansing oils worth it?

Cleansing oils are extremely versatile and suitable for a variety of skin types. Being oil-based, they are particularly effective for those with dry or dehydrated skin, as they help to dissolve and remove makeup and impurities without stripping the skin. 'They are a good option for cleansing sensitive skin,' says Dr. Michéle Sayag, allergist and Bioderma medical strategy director. 'It's frictionless meaning it won't further irritate the skin.' However, individuals with oily or combination skin can also benefit from cleansing oils as they bind themselves to excess sebum and the oils in make-up in order to easily lift them off the skin.

How to deep cleanse your face

Rachael Martin, Grazia's beauty editor, says: 'Using a cleansing oil is a straightforward process - I should know, I use one every evening as part of my routine. Simply start with dry hands and a dry face. Dispense a small amount of the cleansing oil into your palm and gently massage it onto your dry skin using circular motions focussing on areas with makeup. Then, add a small amount of water to emulsify the oil, continuing to massage the skin. Finally, rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water to remove the oil along with the dissolved makeup and impurities.'

Can I use cleansing oil every day

For most people, using a cleansing oil once a day, preferably in the evening in order to remove makeup and impurities accumulated throughout the day, is sufficient. However, some may prefer to use it twice daily for a thorough cleanse in the morning and evening. It’s essential to listen to your skin and adjust the frequency based on how your skin responds. Overuse can potentially lead to over-drying or irritation, so it’s essential to find the right balance for your skin type.

Which Korean cleansing oil is the best?

Anua's Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil is one of the best Korean beauty cleansing oils around. With heartleaf at its core - one of Korea's most formidable anti-inflammatory and anti-bacteria skincare ingredients - this oil cleanses away daily dirt while soothing, fortifying and balancing the skin. It is especially good on acne and redness-prone skin types.
