Once upon a time, Dyson was synonymous with its vacuum cleaners. Nowadays? Well, chances are it’s actually hair tools you’ll think of initially. Since the 2016 launch of the now iconic Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer it’s fair to say that the brand has become a pioneer in the hair industry – lest we forget the Dyson Airwrap and the Dyson Airstrait, which have dominated the realm of #HairTok for years at this point. Yep, Dyson fever shows absolutely no sign of waning.

So, imagine the delights of the masses when whisperings of a new Dyson launch first did the rounds. But this time, it isn’t a tool. This time, it’s the brand's first haircare-meets-styling products. Enter the Dyson Chitosan™ formulations range.

What is the Dyson Chitosan™ formulations range?

Unsurprisingly, there’s been over a decade of research behind this latest foray – especially where ingredients are concerned. The range is powered by chitosan, a complex macromolecule derived from oyster mushrooms and engineered with Dyson Triodetic™ technology. ‘Delicate yet strong, Chitosan is what gives the fungi its shape and provides the basis of Dyson’s flexible hold,’ the brand says. And as for the Dyson Triodetic™ technology? ‘Triodetic™ technology flexibly locks in styles, with a lightweight structure of bonds – without stickiness, brittleness or crunch.’ It’s these flexible bonds that work to allow hair movement and flexibility for all day hold.

What is in the Dyson Chitosan™ formulations range?

The range is available in two formats and has been 'engineered for all hair types'. There's a pre-style cream (available in four variants precisely blended with ingredients tailored to different natural hair) and a Post-style serum, designed to 'hold, hydrate and define end styles.'

Dyson pre style cream
Price: £49 for the full-size (£44 for the refill)

Rachael Martin, beauty editor, says:'This pre-style cream is a delight to use. I'll take it in the palms of my hands and smooth it through my wet hair. The texture is silky and serum like and feels incredibly conditioning - there's high performing silicones in there to add smoothness and maintain lustre. I also saw an impressive reduction in the halo of frizz that often sits around my parting - even on days of high humidity. I use the straight to wavy light conditioning option, but be sure to look through the four variants to find out the best formulation for your own unique hair type - each ingredient is precisely blended tailored to different natural hair shapes.'

Will Kerr, Dyson's VP new product development says: 'Hair is unique. We found through research that not one formula can do it all. Adapting the levels of polymers and emollients in each variant, using lighter oils such as grapeseed oil for the light variants, and richer oils like casterseed oil in the rich variants, personalises the formulas to your specific needs.'

Rachael says: 'This one is suited to all hair types (including colour and chemically treated hair) and has been designed to 'hold and define' your finished style. I do think this is the perfect product for me - I hate the tacky feel of hairspray, so this is a great alternative as it's lightweight. It gives great, flexible hold, hydrates and adds shine. It's also bursting with hair beautifying ingredients like hyaluronic acid to nourish and reduce frizz and amino acids to repair surface damage. A little goes a long way, so while I would say it's an investment, one bottle can last for months at a time.'

Matthew Collins, Dyson ambassador: 'The promise of flexible retention with movement and shine
is an innovation that I know from over 20 years of work as a celebrity stylist, will benefit so many. This
is exactly why Dyson wanted to find a solution to common frustrations with their first product line and design something for all hair types.'
