Is it really worth the hype?

Since the launch of the Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer in 2016, it’s fair to say that Dyson has gone from strength to strength.  Beloved by beauty editors and influencers alike, the hair dryer became one of the most talked-about and sought-after hair tools of all time – until the Dyson Airwrap launched a mere two years later.

Credited for creating some of the best blow-dries of recent years (the Airwrap was responsible for Sophie Habboo’s wedding hair and Matilda Djerf ‘s much coveted signature curls) it’s no wonder it was an instant sell-out with month long waiting lists. Years later, the internet is still awash with Dyson Airwrap fever.

Naturally then, when Grazia heard that Dyson was launching a new tool, there was something of a buzz among the beauty team. Speculation was rife about what it could be and, most importantly, whether or not it would live up to the hype of previous launches. One nondisclosure agreement later, I was heading towards the Dyson press office in a bid to learn more and the good news is it has just launched in the UK.

Scroll on for all you need to know about Dyson’s newest hair tool.

What is the newest Dyson hair tool?

Enter the Dyson Airstrait straightener, a tool that allows wet-to-dry straightening with air – without a heated plate in sight.

‘The Dyson Airstrait delivers the ease-of-use that people love about straighteners but with high-velocity air blades, saves time, maintains hair strength and achieves an everyday natural staright hair,’ says James Dyson, Dyson founder and chief engineer.

This means smoother, sleeker hair with none of the damage associated with traditional straighteners. Consider us intrigued...

Dyson utilises lower temperatures in order to reset the hair's bonds from wet. This mean its internal structure is protected. The end results? A lighter, more shiny finish.

Pros

  • Less heat damage than traditional straighteners

Cons

  • An investment buy

How does the Dyson Airstrait work?

With Dyson, you can be assured that there’s always significant amount of science behind the styling. In order to achieve sleeker, smoother hair, each section is contained by two arms. Then, a precisely angled high-pressure blade of air is forced downwards and into the hair, both simultaneously drying and straight styling. It’s this 45-degree directional airflow that helps align the hair strands for a smoother and more shiny finish.

Can the Dyson Airstrait be used on wet hair?

While, at first glance, it may look like a standard straightener, the Dyson Airstrait is specifically designed for wet-to-dry styling. The intelligent heat control helps to keep damage at bay– with none of the dreaded sizzle. For airflow control, there are two speed settings, low flow and high flow, as well as a cold shot and root drying mode. In need of a next day styling boost? The Dyson Airstrait allows for easy refresh.

Will the Dyson Airstrait work on my hair type?

According to Dyson, the Airstrait has been designed for ‘multiple hair types,’ from thick and curly through to fine and straight. It’s safe to assume that for those with coarser hair types, styling will take longer.

Is the Dyson Airstrait good?

When I first set eyes on the Dyson Airstrait, I can’t deny that I was excited. I’ve got naturally wiry hair and dealing with flyways is always high on my list of beauty bug bears. As a result, I’ll often blow-dry my hair before going in with the straightening irons and finally, my trusty curlers. Perhaps then, this new tool could be the answer to my haircare prayers.

First impressions - it’s pretty and it’s satisfyingly quiet. The slick metallic design and lightweight feel make it a pleasure to use. On the day my hair was styled by celebrity hairstylist Larry King (who counts Karlie Kloss as a fan) and I've only just been able to get a sample of my own to use it myself. The results were impressive - even without a celebrity hairdresser to hand. My hair went from looking unruly and dry, to smooth, silky and soft – all in a breezy 15 minutes.

If you’re someone who likes to have smoother hair (that's not poker straight) or, if like me, you tend to straighten your hair before curling it, then the Dyson Airstrait could be just the ticket.
