Why Was Steve Only In One Of The And Just Like That Trailers?

SATC's Steve will never know true justice

Steve Brady in And Just Like That

The first trailer for season two of Sex And The City spin-off And Just Like That has dropped, and a certain someone was nowhere to be seen. The hit show starring Carrie Bradshaw, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes (and famously NOT Samantha Jones) is back on our screens in June, and we can expect to see several returning characters from season one.

However, poor old Steve, whose heart Miranda trampled on in the last season when she asked for a divorce, seems to have been left out. Steve stans were outraged with his character arc in season one – he was reduced to a cheerio-chomping, sexually inept loser. So it's no wonder Miranda decided to leave him in the midst of her mid-life crisis (where she quit her job, went back to university and fell in love with Carrie's non-binary comedian/ colleague Che).

However, he does appear (very very briefly) in the second trailer, where we see him rip his hat off in Miranda's hallway for about two seconds. So will he appear for one or two scenes? Or are they keeping his role a secret for now? We can't keep up!

The original show, which ran for six seasons between 1998 to 2004, followed the four best friends through the trials and tribulations of their thirties. And after two spin-off films and a huge, public and pretty awkward falling out between Kim Cattrall (who plays Samantha Jones) and Sarah Jessica Parker (who plays Carrie), we thought the franchise had breathed its final breaths.

But how wrong we were! The majority of the original ensemble cast returned in December 2021 and invited us into the lives of our favourite characters in their 50s. However, the script was met with a mixed response from fans who felt some of the storylines and characters had been betrayed. Forget Samantha, who mysteriously 'fell out' with the group and moved to London, let's talk about Steve.

Steve Brady has widely been lauded as a definitive nice guy. He's 'marriage material', 'unproblematic' and not a narcissist. He also treated Miranda really well (except for that one time he slept with someone else) throughout the show. However, the Steve we saw in And Just Like That was a different species entirely. It was as though, to suit the storyline that Miranda would meet someone else (someone better) and ask for a divorce, they just made Steve into a total schmuck. We saw him pose as a lazy teen who ate ice cream on the sofa, had no real drive or connection with his wife, and who bizarrely had forgotten how to have sex with her.

By the end of the season, Miranda had asked for a divorce and he had accepted. He seemed like a lost pup, a sad one at that. And it's quite possible – as the trailer and iMDB page have corroborated – that he's not even in season two. Although since we know Carrie's ex-boyfriend Aidan is back on the scene in the new season, it's possible Steve may appear a few times to sort through his divorce with Miranda or because he and Aidan own a bar together. But all of this is speculation. If the writing team is the same as it was in season one, they've probably made his character move back in with his parents and launch a Twitch account.

Poor Steve. Sigh for Steve. Justice for Steve etc.
