Everyone Is Obsessed With Love Island’s Mary And Her Ex-Footballer Past

Which footballer Mary dated from the premier league is all anyone was Googling last night.

Mary Bedford

It was a scene straight from a sitcom. Love Island’s Mary Bedford sat down for a date with new boy Aaron Simpson, whispering to herself ‘Please don’t be a footballer’ as he made his way over. ‘So what do you do?’ she asked a few minutes into their conversation. ‘I’m a footballer,’ he smiled.

Comedic gold. Perfect timing. Applause all round.

The moment, however, had many viewers asking questions. So much so, ‘Mary Love Island ex footballer boyfriend’ became a breakout search term on Google Trends – as well as, of course, ‘Sutton United’, the fourth division team that Aaron plays for.

It’s not the first time Mary has referenced her romantic past with our nations best kickers. In a conversation with Toby Aromolaran in Casa Amor, she similarly admitted dating a few footballers – noting that Toby’s part in Hashtag United made him just her usual type. That being said, she doesn’t seem too keen to continue on dating ‘professional’ footballers. Yes, that is in quotes because… fourth division? Really?

All jokes aside, Aaron's team of Sutton United is a professional football club - regardless of its league position. Based in Sutton, South London, they were crowned National League champions in 2020–21. They currently play in League Two (said fourth division of English football) and rank 18th in that league at the moment.

But who is Mary’s footballer ex-boyfriend?

Well, many seem to think she’s referring to Love Island’s very own Chris Hughes. The pair dated last year, according to reports, and while Chris is now best known for his TV work, he did once play for Gloucestershire club Bourton Rovers FC. The thing is, Bourton Rovers FC do not play in the premier league, and sources have previously confirmed to The Tab that Mary’s ex is a premier league player.

With that in mind, it’s likely she’s not referring to Chris, but there is still no confirmation as to whom she was actually referring. Perhaps one of England’s finest will come out and claim to be Mary’s ex in time, or maybe she’ll let it slip when she leaves the villa – either way, it seems viewers are on tenterhooks to know.

Frankly, we’re more interested in how she gets on with Aaron – because Lord knows that Chloe Burrows and Toby don’t need any more drama in their Love Island journey… no matter how much we love to watch it.
